What $300 shotgun mic can I buy to pair with my DR-40?

I bought the DR40 a year back so I could plug right into sound board while doing weddings and used a videomic pro for sound. Now I wanted to get a shotgun for my narrative work. I originally bought the NTG-2 without doing my research. It turns out the pre-amps on the DR40 arent good enough to power the mic. I am returning the NTG2 today and want to go with something else. Any advice?

The new $400 Sennheiser MKE600 sounds better than the NTG-2 mic and produces a stronger output signal. I often use it with my Tascam DR-40, though you may still want to boost the audio level in post. ( I always record with audio peaks at -12 dB to ensure that I have head-room when recording, and then process the recorded audio afterwards. )

AT875r best mic by far under $300 I have five of them now and far superior to the rode NTG 1 or 2.

Ok you can pay more but this is my go for gen purpose shotgun.
