So I'm taking a scuba diving class right now, and it was suggested that we buy our own wet suit. The thing is; I had already been thinking about buying one for surfing because I'm hopefully moving to so cal in December. I would love to kill two birds with one stone.

The instructor said that his suit is 7mm, but the thickest one that I've seen for surfing is 2mm. What should I do? Is there a happy medium?

My thanks in advance to anyone who has input.

Man just use F6 on the scene file thing... it works great for what your doing
(my standard anwser when i have no idea wtf is going on, be honest I'm not alone)

Just make sure wen u get a suit...it doesnt look like youd be smuggling a Slim Jim and two cherries inthe water..hahahaha...if that did happen...i think it means the suit is wayyy too small..

It depends on how cold the water is. 7mm is thick as hell. On the oregon coast though people use that thickness to surf sometimes......

In Socal?

Get both TC. But you can surf in the Summer without a suit (I used to use just a Vest)

Must get a dive suit for diving. You will be going UNDERWATER. It is very cold UNDERWATER.

In SoCal you can surf an extra couple of months a year with a 2 or 3 mil spring suit. These have short sleeves and knee-length legs. For open water work - except in the tropics - you'll want a full body suit.

John is right about summer in SoCal - we used to go out with only rash guards when the water was at its warmest. Even then, it was more for some SPF and to keep your sexy chest hair off your waxy stick. Heh-heh... waxy stick.

Cool. I was having a hard time connecting the dots. Yah, the last time I was near the ocean was kiteboarding and that was in February... Definitely need a wet suit that time of year! I kinda forgot about Hawaii.. Never been there, actually. Perhaps as time moves on and I get into underwater camera, we'll have something more to chat about. . .

If you're into kiteboarding, you've got to go to Hawaii!

That's what I've heard! I had a free weekend on South Padre Island, Texas earlier this year and I was able to spend an afternoon in laguna madre with private kiteboarding instructions. It was a fabulous first experience... Hawaii is definitely on the "must visit" list as well! I really wish I lived closer to the ocean, but well, I'm in Indiana!
