Western Digital 500GB external MyBook Pro -- good? bad ?

Everyone tells me WD harddrives are not realiable.
Either go with Hitachi, Segates, Fujistu.
I've never had a Segate go out on me before...maybe I'm just lucky. All harddrives will fail at some point.
Good luck on your decision or wait next year, prices will fall drastically on harddrives.

Why, what's coming next year? I bought it by the way. Still need a shotgun mic and here I go wasting money on storage. Time to hit the poker tables and win myself some more hardware money.

I liked this one better than a lot of others, but these things come down to the price/performance ratio.

Honestly a drive's a drive. The interface conversion that sits in the box between the drive and the firewire/usb cable is far faster than the drive can ever hope to be, so you won't notice a difference in speeds between WD/segate/maxtor.

For every "i'll never buy a WD drive" there's an "i'll never buy a Seagate drive" and a "i'll never buy a Maxtor drive". Reliability's generally exceptional across all of them considering what the drives do and how they work, defects just come down to a luck of the draw thing.

Make sure you're running a 7200 RPM drive and you've got the best price/performance ration you can get and you'll be fine. You'll only be able to measure the difference, you won't feel it in your workflow.

I picked up 2 320's when I started the horror fest capturing and post, for backup. So far so good.

Though, you get more bang for your buck if you get a USB 2 enclosure and then buy internal HDs to put in there. I always think external HDs are overpriced. But in this case I just needed storage fast, so grabbed these.

I'm not a fan of western digital harddrives. I Like seagate better if not just for the fact that they offer a 5 year warranty instead of 3 year. Also I don't like sealed external enclosure because I can't swap the drive if something happens. I think it's always better to buy the enclosure then put an internal HD and put them together

We have one of those at work, and soo far its been great with no problems. We also have a 500 gig lacie big disk and a 500 gig G-Raid and all luckily with no issues! I have had soo many problems with Segate drives, but as you can tell it seems like everyone has had a problem with one maker or another.

Just my $.02

I picked up the 500 WD USB2 external a few weeks ago. It was $200 at Best Buy. It has worked flawlessly and looks pretty slick. I've also got two 250 external Seagates. Both brands are good. I'd just grab the best deal.
