Re: Westcott 6 in 1 Reflector AWESOME

Taylor,

Love mine, have had it for 4 years now. Got this accessory recently which makes it easier to use: http://www.adorama.com/PFLDH.html?searchinfo=pfldh&item_no=1

Since I don't have a lot of extra stands, arms, etc., this made it easy to attach the reflector to a tripod or anything else handy. Guess one could be homemade with a rod/broomstick & one of those $4 .96 packs of 24 plastic clamps at wal-mart. Also makes it much easier for an assistant to hold the reflector.

Re: Westcott 6 in 1 Reflector AWESOME

I just realized I have an old mic stand and arm...should be able to modify that...thanx Barry

Re: Westcott 6 in 1 Reflector AWESOME

Yeah, that'd work. All you'd need would be some clips to hold the reflector. Those great big spring paper clamps would work for that, probably...

Re: Westcott 6 in 1 Reflector AWESOME

Check out those clamps at Wal-mart - $5 for a big bag of assorted sizes of hand clamps (big to tiny.) Being plastic, wouldn't put 'em close to a light, but for everything else, they are great.

Can you post a pix of the clip...I really don't know what they look like. I was also thinking of the holding clamps you get at the hardware store, but they seem like overkill.

Re: Westcott 6 in 1 Reflector AWESOME

Taylor, I'm on the road for two weeks & all my stuff is back home. The clamps are like the good hardware store clamps (the Pony ones, sort of like a pair of scissors - squeeze the grips). But the package I'm talking about contains assorted sizes: from the large hand-held to some about 1.5" or so. If I can get by a Walmart, I'll take my camera in & take a pic.

Re: Westcott 6 in 1 Reflector AWESOME

hey Barry, how does that Impact stand compare to the Bogen convertable boom stand?

Re: Westcott 6 in 1 Reflector AWESOME

Hey guys, make sure you really pad those pony clamps, otherwise they'll rip the reflectors over time. Wrap'em with gauze and then gaffers tape. That'll make a soft knob for the surface. Also, for studio use, the mic stand ought to be fine, but you might want to sandbag it. For exterior use, you may still have to use a light stand or C-stand for support. I love these things, but they are like sails in the wind.

I don't know whether the stand I have is an Impact or not -- I suspect it is. The one I got was off ebay, and cost more than the Impact.

Are you referring to the Bogen 3398? That looks like a great stand, in fact I almost ordered one from Rush, but I have enough light stands now so I didn't bother. The convertible light stand/boom stand I have (which may very well be the Impact) works fine as a reflector holder, and it's half the price of the Bogen. And the Bogen doesn't include clamps for the reflector.

With that said, the Bogen is much more useful (can hold 22 pounds, vs. 5 for the Impact) so if you can afford it, get the Bogen, definitely.

Re: Westcott 6 in 1 Reflector AWESOME

I just got one of the Impact stands, and it is identical to the one I got off ebay (which used another name, and cost $15 more).

So for a decent lightstand/boomstand/reflector holder, the Impact at $59.95 is not a bad choice. It's not a heavy-duty light stand, but it does a good job with reflectors (although you may need a small counterweight to keep it properly balanced).

I have a couple of the Bogen covertible boom stands and they're insanely great stands. Extremely heavy duty and very well constructed. I've used them to boom mics as well as lights (w/softbanks). They're probably overkill for holding reflectors though. I use them with the Photoflex counterweight bags which can be filled with water.

Westcott products are awesome--agreed. I have some of the reflectors and a couple of their articulated reflector arms. The reflector arms are OEMed from Manfrotto and have a nice clip system. Photoflex also makes a nice reflector holder. I'll have to check out the Impact stuff--you can never have too many stands.
