Okay I am shooting a short movie in April that will last one weekend and I am trying to figure out where to shoot it. I am looking for a deserted highway look. It can be in the desert or in the woods. I would prefer the woods. There will be a couple car shoots and then shoots in the woods for most of the short. Anyone know any place like that in L.A. area where they would let me shoot for a weekend? I am thinking a one way street somewhere in the mountains that people don't normally go down or something like that. This is also a night time shoot. Thanks folks.

I assume you are talking about big bear lake? If so it is over 2 hours away. I was hoping to stay under 1 hour from los angeles. If any of the ballers here at dvxuser has a house on a hill in california I would love to use your backyard.:)

Angeles National Forest (locally known as "Angeles Crest") is closest to Los Angeles, and offers lots of shooting opportunities. Just be aware, that if a Park Ranger spots you, he may shut you down. Permits for shooting in their park system are expensive, I think about $1,500/day. At the very least, you'll need to buy parking permits for each vehicle (cheap). The good thing about Angeles Crest is that it's relatively close to the city, just to the northeast of Pasadena (La Canada/Flintridge area).

Here's the park's official site:

Angeles National Forest

I've shot in several Southern California national parks without any problems at all (even using dolly track, Steadicam, etc.) using a small VX2000. Use a bigger, more pro camera, and you may get shut down. Then just pack up, and find another location in the park!

Oh, here's the parking permit site:

Adventure Pass Info

They're called "Adventure Passes" and a daily pass is only $5. These can be purchased online, at staffed park entrances, and at most major sporting goods stores in the Los Angeles area (e.g., Sports Authority, etc.).

We've shot up in Topanga Canyon and You might try Decker Canyon. At night, I can't imagine any traffic up there or very little. You might try Stunt road as well above Malibu.
