Went out and caught the Aurora Borealis tonight

I've been meaning to get into time lapsing for a while now, but it's not until now that MARIANNE is wrapping up that I've had the time to actually do it.

So anyway, since I need a company logo to play in front of the film I thought I'd go out and see if I can get video. There's just no time or money to do anything animated for this anyway.

I went out yesterday too but failed completely to get anything nice. Today on the other hand, I was going for starfields, but got even more.

So this is something I threw together, and maybe I'll make the company logo something like this. I'd love to hear your comments on that.

Excellent. Too bad the compression pipeline to Vimeo didn't really do justice to the subtly of color that the Aurora Borealis can give you. I haven't seen the Northern Lights in a long time, but they did blow me away when I saw them. Thanks for sharing that.

Yeah. It's that damn h.264 I think.

The northern lights come and go in ten year periods I think. Right now, we're in a lowpoint and there will be another 5-10 years until they start getting really bright again. Last year I was looking almost every night but didn't see them once. Tonight it must have been visible for an hour or two, on and off.

I only caught the last 15-30 minutes of it though, but still. At least now I know a good spot so next time there's a starry night I'll go out and get some more.

Very cool! Here in Detroit we are at about 42 degrees. When we saw the Northern lights we were much farther north (relatively) at above about 45 degrees. They were great. I can't imagine how cool they look to you. Thanks again.

It's too bad about the clouds. The lights from the city made them much too bright.
On a clear night the borealis would have been easier to shoot I bet.

I used a ten second shutter speed and took a picture every 15 seconds. Looking at it now, maybe I should have used a faster shutter speed and taken more shots.

What do you guys think?
