welding rods

Does anybody know what type of welding rods to use that are good for flashs of light and also rods that drip sparks?

Thanks,
bart

Both mig and tig as well as conventional rods create a bright white flash. You should know that looking at this flash without eye protection can cause you to "get flahed" - which means you can have watery eyes and pretty severe nausea and dizziness for about half hour after the flash.

They all can generate sparks under the right conditions. Of course you would need a full welding rig setup to do this. I recommed a mig machine because they are relatively small and attainable.

An HMI with a louvered blinds or shutters in front of it is the safer way to create flash effects. A strobe would also work. Sparks are another matter and I'm not totally sure what Hollywood uses to create sparks but I doubt that it is welding equipment.

Find a steel foundry or tool shops even. This could give you a variety of sparks and firey effects. I have a buddy that has a Smithy where he forges swords and knives. One of these days, I need to show up with my cam.

Right, just shoot in front of a black background and then composite in. I was thinking more about the old non-photographic sfx way they used to do it when you would have showers of sparks shooting out of a control panel or something.

maya 8.5's particle and flueds engines do a great job with sparks, also realflow's fluids do an amazing job, grab a book, and hit limewire or some other dl site and start creating.

a standard stick welder can be had at autozone for 100 to 150 bucks, will produce some nice sparks, but nothing huge that will fill a long shot, I'm not 100% sure what you want here, if its ala The Natural with Redford running through the sparks after the home run, and you use a welder to shower your actors, your going to have to pissed off actors and some real hospital bills and law suits, those sparks arn't really just sparks, its red hot melted metel, I'f someone put that on me i'd jump ugly on their butts. so be careful!!!!!!!!

I know they're totally 'canned' and cheap effects but I think Digital Juice has a DVD of sparks in their Editor's Toolkit series. Might be worth a google. Or not....

Anyone know how many angle grinders were used in this video or even if they were angle grinders?

They seem to have a row of them placed in front and another row placed behind the talent.

Wouldn't you need a pyrotechnics licence to do something like this? Looks like someone could get hurt if it wasn't planned to implemented properly.
