Well everyone, welcome to the "privileged" area for all you HDbootcampers.

Ill have more info here tomorrow, just want to get this setup tonight to get you all in here.

Feel free to ask any questions, give recommendations etc.

Okay, I'll start with the questions. What would you like us to bring? Is just the camera enough? If we have HD monitors (Dell, etc...), would you like us to bring those? I would love for someone to bring their Redrock M2 (if anyone coming has one). Any thoughts?

Big Mike,
I'll be your new best friend if you bring your M2!

I'm more than happy to bring my M2, but I don't want to pull focus (pun intended) from Barry and Jarred!

Forgive if this is posted elsewhere. However, I haven't been able to find whether we're on our own for lunch or should bring something.

Bigmike, thanks for volunteering to bring in your redrock. if you have some footage for us to review, i'd love to see that as well.

oh and i have a feeling you guys better get ahead of BigMike in the food line
Hey! You only have to worry about me if Milanos or Ca Del Sol is catering, otherwise I eat the same as everyone else.:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Bigmike, thanks for volunteering to bring in your redrock. if you have some footage for us to review, i'd love to see that as well.
I'm sorry, but I don't have any footage yet.
I haven't used it or the camera for a shoot yet, but I've assembled it once. I'll make sure I do it again before the weekend and I might bring the camera with the Redrock assebled on it so I don't spend all morning tweaking it. Maybe we can hook it up to a big monitor. I've only got a 7" Varizoom.

You know, I still haven't shot anything with the camera yet!!! New baby, work and a big wedding project have filled all my spare time. I may not get to really use it till later in April when I shoot a training video down in San Diego.

Hi guys,

Here’s my list of questions for Saturday. My background is in film, and I’ve used most of the 16mm cameras including Bolex, Canon Scoopic, Éclair NPR&ACL, Aaton, Arri S, and Arri SRII. I’d like to understand the HVX’s limitations better so I can maximize the image quality and increase production value.

I’m interested in the following:

1. LIGHTING
• Int. day and night – tips to avoid digital artifacts.
• Ext. night – are light panels good enough or do I need to rent HMIs?
• Lighting ratios – 2:1, 4:1, etc.
• Min. room fill- somebody suggested 30 foot candles.
• Noise on the red channel – Evin recommended balancing on the warm side. A demo would be great.
• Fluorescent lighting vs. Kino Flo.
• Balancing for mercury and sodium lamps.
• Lighting kits – I’m used to renting 5K-10K lights and generators. Would a smaller kit (300W, 650W, 1K, 2K) be good enough for normal size interiors?

2. LENS LIMITATIONS
• Diffraction – Barry mentioned to shoot between f2.8 and f8. Others suggested f4 or f5.6.
• Chromatic aberrations – at what focal length? Zoomed in? Aperture wide open?
• Barrel distortions – at what focal length? Wide angle only?
• Focus – I’m used to optical glass viewfinders. I’ve read the “focus sticky”, but depth of field charts for the HVX would be helpful.
• The lens shifts f-stop over the zoom range from f1.6 to f2.8. What are the f-stops at different focal lengths? Is it better to stay at f2.8?

3. EXPOSURE CONTROL AND GOOD CONTRAST
• I like the blacks to be black and the whites to be white.
• Good skin tone reproduction without any green tint.
• DSC charts – what are the camera settings when properly calibrated? Are they consistent from camera to camera and from one lighting set up to the next one?
• Can you ride the aperture smoothly? Canon uses 1/4 stop increments.

4. PIXEL SHIFT
• Panasonic has maxed out this technology. I’ve seen its benefits on resolution, but what impact does it have on highly saturated or solid colors (reds, blues, magentas) and the use of color filters and gels?
• Any motion artifacts to be aware of?

5. FILTERS
• The camera is optimized for tungsten-balanced lighting. Would an 85B filter produce a better image quality than an electronic balance for daylight? Ditto for ND filters.

6. CAMERA SETTINGS FOR 24 FPS, 180 DEGREES
• Cinelike_D Gamma – Why does the manual recommend to underexpose by a 1/2 stop?
• Master Ped = 0? – I want rich blacks without crushing them.
• Detail = 0? – for HD projection and a potential film out.
• IRE Levels – the camera records at 0%, but broadcast legal is at 7.5%. When the levels are adjusted in post, would the blacks get more milky?
• Camera presets for different film stocks like the Kodak 5245 or 5248.
• Skin tone DTL – is it better to use classic soft filters, improved makeup techniques or softer lighting?

7. AUDIO
• Any sync issues? Is the audio running 3-4 fields ahead of the picture in 1080PA?
• Monitoring levels without a mixer.
• Mic gain is set to –50db or –60db, but most professional mics are set to –40db. What do I need?

8. 720P vs. 1080P
• I would like to see images projected on the big screen for comparison.
• The 720P images looked great at Plaster City.

9. P2 WORK FLOW AND FCP
• A written down step-by-step procedure would be great.
• OTG drives – I’m still searching for an external, FireWire battery powered drive. An updated list of workable HD’s would be great.
• Mac laptop vs. P2 store – Can I install FCP Studio 5.1 on two computers?
• Meta data – Does that also include f-stops and focal lengths or do I have to use the SD memory card?
• Clip Management – How can I organize each clip by scene # and take # instead of the random numbers that the camera selects?
• Firmware upgrades – Are they backwards compatible? When the 16 GB cards come out, can I still use the 4 GB cards? What are all the other upgrades for?

10. DISTRIBUTION
• What HD mastering tape is best suited for the HVX? D5 or HDCAM SR and why?
• Are there any HD channels that accept the HVX as an A camera without any restrictions?

I appreciate all your help and am looking forward to Saturday.

Thanks,

Bea

Wow, Beatrice! My kind of woman! You not only really *answer* a question, but you knock every man in the room out of the park. Now I'm going to have to research your list so that I won't reveal myself to be the techno-troglodyte that I am.

And Big Mike...have you got a matte box for your set up? I can bring my HVX Chrosziel with follow focus and a set of rings and see what we can make work if it seems of value and we have time. And maybe if someone has an assortment of lenses...maybe we can extend the session to "post HVX hours" and toy around.
