Weird Question- Measuring Energy Levles (Need help!)

Hey everyone!

This is a long post, but some People? might find it interesting. So, bare with me :/

This is a pretty strange question, but I need some help, none the less. I'm writing my senior research paper in May of 2008. It needs to be a correlation between to things, so I've chosen: Energy Levels and different sleeping and eating habits.

I'm not sure if anyone knows whatt BI-phasic sleeping is? It's where you sleep in two chunks instead of one long chunk at night, usually adding up to either 4.5 hours, or 6 hours of sleep. I would be sleeping from 2:00a.m.- 6:30a.m. and a 1.5 hour nap at 3:00p.m. The schedule is very lenient on your sleeping times, it doesn't have to be concrete...at all. There has been tons of research on it, and I've done up to a month on this schedule with a huge energy increase, surprising even to me!

Now the change in diet, which I did for about 3 weeks was an all-raw Vegan diet. Meaning you don't eat anything processed. I had a HUGE energy increase doing this as well.

Now, I've found a way to measure my energy levels. Three times a day, morning, afternoon, and night, I'm going to rate myself on a scale that I've devised. Goes something like this 1- What's going on...where am I? 3- I can't keep my eyes open 5- I'm functioning, but I could do better... 7- I feel pretty awake, I think I can handle whatever happens 10- BRING IT ON! I can handle anything and I'm ready to go.

When recording this change I'm (hopefully) going to use an excel spread sheet so I can see percent increases for different variables later on. How should I format this?

Something like this maybe?

Fell asleep (time) Woke up Energy- Morning Energy- afternoon Energy- Night

And of course a coulmn with the dates. I'm not sure how to add in the change in diet? And if I find a way, should I add in what I ate as well?

I'm REALLY sorry for the long post, I am just stumped as to how to record my progress, and what to record. If you're willing to reply that'd be awesome!

Thanks!

Hey Logan... that's fascinating stuff, I'd really like to learn more about BI-phasic sleep, because-

a. I almost always wake up at about 4am and take an hour to get back to sleep.

b. I always feel like I could do with a really snoringly deep sleep about mid-day

... so maybe it might suit me a whole lot better to try Bi Phasic sleep? Are there books or websites worth checking out?

OK, so to try to give you some feedback, maybe you could add a "Total Hours Night Sleep", "Total Hours Day Sleep", and "Total Combined 24 Hour Sleep". You could set excel to calculate all that for you from the raw data, and maybe see if there's a correlation in there you weren't previously aware of? Maybe also you could come up with a way of rating daily activity, to see how that impacts on the data - for example a relaxing weekend would have a different efffect on sleep requirement and energy levels than a crazy busy day stuck in traffic. And maybe rate your state of mind, which might be closely related to energy levels, but not quite the same. For example, maybe one day you're feeling positive about life and you love your neighbours, and maybe a week later nothing works out for you, and everyone's pissing you off - could sleep be affecting your mood or vice versa?

I have no clue about any of this stuff, by the way, but hey... I tried!

Good luck, and keep us posted on how it's working out for you!

Those are some awesome suggestions. I was basically going to try and incorporate everything into the study. I'm just confused on how to put it all into excel. And as for biphasic sleeping, there are tons of websites. I'll send a few your way.

That last one just has a lot of general stuff about biphasic AND polyphasic sleep. Do a search on there and you should find a lot.
