Weird phasing effect while recording music with on-camera microphone

Weird...

Anyway, where are the speakers, and where are you in relation to them? As you move, you're switching between different sets of speakers, AND shifting the pickup pattern of the mic around... there are also zones where multiple speakers may be canceling each other out at various frequencies. The best bet for consistent sound is of course to get the mic off the camera and place it in a stationary location. If that's not practical for you, an omni mic will help a bit... it will remove most of the mic pickup-pattern issues from the equation, but will not address speaker proximity or speaker interaction effects...

A stupid, quick-n-dirty thing try without any investment is to point the SM58 UP rather than in the direction the camera points... this will give you an approximately omnidirectional pickup pattern in the horizontal plain, and will reduce some seaker proximity effects because you likely will never be pointing directly at any of the speakers. (If there are close ceiling mounted or downward-pointing wall-mounted speakers... try pointing the mic DOWN!)

Your best option is to get a feed of the band off of the FOH mix console using a separate audio recorder (second best would be a stationary mic or stereo pair into an audio recorder) and then match the video to that. Your camera mic becomes a reference for sync.

Easy answer - nothing wrong with the microphone at all - and even a better than SM58 would have had the same problem. You're correct, it's phase based but is happening as you move past the wedge monitor - so you're hearing the PA, then as you get close to the singer, you're also hearing the monitor - note how it goes again as soon as you get away from the speaker pointing up at the singer. The same thing can happen as you get two sources arrive from the main pa when the further one is a distance away. Luckily, the volume of the out of phase signal is lower, so the effect isn't as prominent. A static off camera microphone would be better - but a desk feed a huge improvement. The SM58 is hopeless at the bass end - hence why the song is guitar heavy, bass light.
