Weird opening QuickTime file

Has anyone ever come across the following problem opening a QuickTime file created in FCP? I was sent a QuickTime file of a 90 minute film and can't open it or import it into FCP, PremierePro or Avid without it needing the original video and audio files which it was created from. The editor is a professional but this is just one of many unusual things that go along with any files he creates. I thought a QuickTime file was a QuickTime file - independent of the files on the timeline it was exported from!

Sounds like you were sent a Quicktime Reference file (which is just a pointer to the original media).

If you want a single file that is self referencing you need a file that is exported as "self contained"

you need to put a check in the little box when you export the movie,
Make movie self-contained

1gb

1gb

I actually thought the same thing, until I checked the size - 1GB - far greater than a reference file would be. Is it possible to get a file that big but with elements of a reference file? It's really weird!:crybaby:

1 GB isn't that big for a 90 min. show unless it's compress from its origional form.
Not sure but I think FCP will export a reference file that seems large because it may not "copy" the origional QT clip (the ones it's referencing) but does copy any render files into the reference movie making it seem large for just a reference movie.

In the great words of Jerry Zucker, "...Just because it's someone's job, doesnt mean they know what they are doing..."

Thanks

Thanks

Thanks for the advice guys. I've asked the editor to double-check his output settings and send me a new 'self-contained' file.
