I notice that when I apply the "Black and white crunch" effect from MB in PP2, I get a lot of noise in the grey areas. suggestions?

probably hard to avoid, the grain is from your original footage.
when you crunch the blacks and whites, you're increasing the contrast of the image - you're taking the middle part of your range (grays) and stretching them over a greater range of darkness and lightness. This exaggerates differences in the brightness of adjacent pixels, if it exists (aka noise).
