Weird audio output prb.

I give up!

Audio from my G5- goes out optically or from the headphone jack (with RCA adaptor) to a normal receiver/tuner/amp. Speakers are "System Seven" (nice editing suite type monitors)

Problem is that the sound is very cheesy. As if I have really old 2" car speakers hooked up.

I don't understand what could be happening here. Somehow the audio signal is becoming very degraded after leaving the G5 and to the speakers.

I've checked the G5 output with studio grade headphones and it sounds perfect so I know it's signal is fine at least. All audio wire connnections are fine/new and have been double checked. I also connected a PDA Mp3 player to the same RCA inputs, to the amp/tuner, and it's sound was just fine through the same system!

What in the world could be happening here??

do you have the g5 system volume all the way up on the output? If so back it off to about 50%. You may be overdriving the signal into the amp

I've tried adjusting the volume but it doesn't help (just gets too quiet to hear)

Also, adjusting volume wouldn't have anything to do with the optical output, which I have been trying in addition to the headphone output.

Though the sound does sound like it's being overdriven, like when volume is up too high, excpet that it is at the proper Db level.

I'm so lost here. I've got $500 worth of speakers and tuner that I can't even use effectively at this point.

Sure you're on LINE OUT?

Sorry but I'm unclear as to what you meant.

Outside of the line or headphone out issue, why would the same poor sound quality problem exist when I'm trying to listen to audio using the optical output too?
