wedding audio issue

I have a wedding sunday and no Lav. All I have is my HVX sticks rode ntg2 3 25ft XLR cables and a mic stand... What is my best bet to get acceptable audio without being to obtrusive?

Well if you can scout the location before the wedding, my best advice would be to try and hide the NTG-2 behind some plants or something, close enough to capture the audio. Have a friend stand where the wedding party will be and talk, and just do the best you can shy of going out and buying a wireless system

If there's someone competent running live sound for the wedding, they should have the ability to give you a feed off their board.

I've done sound for more weddings than I can count over the years, and I've always got an independent feed set up for the video folks, whether they use it or not.

ehhh problem is im going to have about an hour of time to figure this out once I get there. Would my NTG2 pick up the audio if im in the back? Im wondering if I could try and get behind the preist.

In all the weddings I've ever done (which admittedly is not an amazingly large number), there's never been anybody at the church who knows more about the sound system than how to turn the priest's lav on. And that's usually just the priest. :)

(And, as somebody whose company has done more than a few sound installations for churches, I'm guessing that your average church hasn't paid extra to have a line-out on their sound system that has to be so simple that all it takes is for the priest to turn his lav on. :D )

Unfortunately very true.

you've posted many times months ago about how to get best audio of bride & groom at a wedding. myself and others told you a lav on the groom is the best solution, hands down. you are not going to get sufficient audio with a shotgun mic unless you've got a boom op swingin a boom while they mumble their i-do's. its just not gonna happen. for that ntg2 to get decent enough levels its going to have to be atleast 6 feet from the source, and thats on axis. 95% of the shoot your subject is going to be off axis.

do yourself a favor and rent a lav. at the most, probably $60 and thats over estimating.

calumet might be your best shot since their site says they are open saturdays.

There is no best bet - you simply won't be able to get acceptable sound at all, unless your standard of "acceptable" is pretty low.

problem is im going to have about an hour of time to figure this out once I get there.
You are at the day before the wedding and you haven't yet visited the venue to scout the location, map out your shot locations, coverage requirements, and camera angles, talked to the priest and gone over any ground rules he might have, gone over the minute by minute order of service so you'll know exactly where the important people will be and when they'll move so you'll know when YOU have to move, taken that info and prepared a shot list, looked at the sound system to see what options you have there to pick up a feed??????

Would my NTG2 pick up the audio if im in the back? Im wondering if I could try and get behind the preist.

It will pick up audio but it will sound like c**p. For optimum quality, a short 'gun like the NTG-2 needs to be about 3 feet from the speaker and aimed directly at the speaker's throat. Even 6 inches variation in aim will make a difference. Behind the priest won't help either - the B&G will be shielded by the priest while the priest's voice will project away from you unless his mouth is in the back of his head. (Plus you'd be standing in the alter area, usually a no-no.)

You're asking your equipment to do something that the laws of physics say it simply cannot do.

Sorry to sound so harsh but it sounds like a potential CF and I ain't talkin' about no memory card.
