Hey ya'll,

So I've decided to build myself a proper website and was looking at getting a Wordpress blog themed site. Essentially something that can handle content whilst looking pretty. I just noticed this one for example - http://demo.graphpaperpress.com/widescreen/

However, I know that in the past when I've tried to use blogging software like Wordpress I've had lots of trouble with things not showing up.

I was told it was something about dedicated servers or something but really I don't know how it all works from a tech geek pov.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on this issue, what to do etc

well for me.. i took a poster that we are working on and put in photoshop and chopped it up.. I want to keep the same look all around for the most part.. But im not an expert at this.. Just going with what looks good for us.. Still working alot on it and adding links

Wordpress is simple and great. IMO, you can't go wrong with it. There are lots of stock themes that look great. You'll hear people say stuff like, "yeah, but I don't want my site to look like everyone else's site." But most themes can be customized fairly easily (even basic stuff like changing the colors and adding a custom logo can make a big difference).

If you aren't a techie, Wordpress is definitely the way to go (again, IMO). Most hosts (I highly recommend hostgator if you haven't already selected one) even offer one-click setup.

Ignore anyone who says you need a dedicated server. Yes, you might eventually want one for other reasons but my strong suspicion is that you're a long way from needing one.

My advice. Go with wordpress. Play around with the admin panel until you are reasonably comfortable with it (should take you about 15 minutes). Install a simple theme (the graph paper press ones are nice but not necessarily simple). Start working on content. Leverage Vimeo to store your videos and embed them within your posts (copy/paste embed code from Vimeo into the HTML tab within a post). Publish. Done.

Get the hang of it for a few days/weeks. Then go find a better template that suits your needs better. And then go discover all the free plugins that would cost you a small fortune to pay someone to build for you using your own site.
