New to screenwriting here. I'm reading Story by McKee and he says that, by choosing a genre, the writer also chooses some conventions or requirements he must (in most cases) include in order to meet audience expectations. For example, in a Detective Thriller, a murder must take place early in the film.
That example seems obvious enough, but I'm sure there are plenty of these in each genre that might not be so obvious. Is there a website or book that compiles these genre conventions/requirements? It would be much faster, easier, and safer than relying on memory of films one's seen in each genre.
