Website Optimization and CSS

Kirk Gillock

Rebel with a cause
A lot of DVXusers seem to have websites that they've built so I just wanted to share this info.

My site has used CSS (cascading style sheets) for the past year, but I only just now realized the full potential of its power. You can "almost" build everything in css that you can in html. A few hours ago my site's template was more than 200 lines of code (tables, fonts, junk, etc.) and now it's down to only 70 lines, thanks to CSS. If you have a website I highly recommend looking into making the switch. Not sure what took me so long, but I'm glad I'm finally on the bandwagon.

Here's one CSS tutorial. There's probably better ones out there.

Also, check your site to see where the dead weight is and what can be improved. Optimizing images is a quick way to speed up your site.

I think Kai wrote about CSS a while back. Hopefully he'll jump in with some more advice.

Yes, Kai is a big proponent of CSS.

PK - If you find yourself wanting to play around some more with CSS, I know a website you can work on. :thumbsup:

anyone else noticed that IE doesn't understand CSS? or rather, it misreads it intentionally. CSS is a good idea but it starts getting annoying when you have to hardcode separate lines for IE so that the sites don't look like complete crap in all the other browsers.

just my holiday rant

Unfortunately, Microsoft doesn't believe in following the standards. :(

Odd.

I used to try out the pages in IE, Opera, and Mozilla after doing CSS (and strict 4.01) using a real CSS editor thingie when I was doing authoring.

It always looked right in IE and like crap in the others.

Here here! CSS is to web layout as tires were to cars.

Stupid analogy, but CSS really is powerful, and so much leaner in the code as PK pointed out.

Tables = RIP
