I am looking to make a website for myself. I have looked into a few hosts and it looks like yahoo small business is a good deal. They charge like 12 bucks a month for the domain and hosting with supposedly unlimited storage. Does anyone know if that is true and does that mean that I can post up high quality quicktime files for viewing on the site. Im really new to the website thing so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'd check out IXwebhosting, my old site was hosted by them and I found them very good. They have plans ranging from $4.95 to $12.95 a month, with a ton of features

Yahoo is a nice service. I don't know about unlimited storage.

There is also a difference between storage on the server and bandwidth per month.

I will say this from experience. DONT GO GLOBAT.

I have heard great things about Bluehost.com - I am moving my site here as soon as my Globat term is up next month.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Im going to take a look at all the choices you gave me. I found that yahoo also has unlimited data transfer and storage space. It seems like the best deal but I have to look into it more. Thanks again.

It's funny when someone says they have unlimited bandwidth. I'd love to see how that really plays out in reality. I mean, if everyone used 3 terabytes of transfer per month there's no way they would do that. I used to be in the Web business, ran a lot of sites that made a good profit on banner ads, and knew a lot of hosting guys, and it's all a numbers game. It's just like the gym. They know that 90% of their members never even show up once per month, in fact at my old gym it was 92% hadn't had a login at 24 Hour Fitness for a month or more. So they know that if they get you to pay $1,000 upfront and then charge you only $5 a month, which is what I signed up for, for life, it's still a good deal for them. Sure, if 100% of people used the gym 4-5 times a week they'd be totally screwed, but they're counting on that not happening and statistics say they don't have to worry about it ;)

Probably the same with hosting. I pay $85 per month for a dedicated server. I can host up to 20 domain names and I have 1.5 terabytes of transfer with about 60 gigs of storage space I guess. It's actually the cheapest dedicated server they offer. But the number is never "unlimited" transfer, unless you pay for an OC3 connection and "unmetered" bandwidth, where you get basically however much that connection can output, I think it's 10 megabits per second. Something absurd like that.

Hi Tomy,

There's dozens (hundreds) of items to consider when selecting your web service provider. I use a handful of different well-known companies and they're all basically okay. For reliable service, Yahoo is my favorite even though some of their customer service folks have an attitude and they're fairly restrictive barring some scripts on their Linux-based server.

If you do decide to go with a smaller web service provider, you should be aware they may eventually be acquired by another company - that could lead to some nasty headaches if you have a sizeable account. On the other hand, some web develpers have found even bigger marketing-focused companies like go-daddy may have nasty terms and conditions (search the net for "go daddy sucks").

But generally, most of the decent web service providers are okay.

Regards, Michael
