Web HD data rates

Hi everyone,
I am just fishing for some thoughts on web HD compression.

Any thoughts on what format, data rate, and dimensions to get the biggest screen size, smoothest picture and an acceptable load time out of 720p footage?

I'm inclined to choose H.264, just because it is familiar. Am I overlooking a magical codec? I am experimenting a bit with some clips, but any input or personal recipes would be awesome.

Thanks

Well assuming that anyone who is going to watch video on the net has a decent connection, you can push it a little.

I use the following for the videos on the WCC flash site (link is in my sig)

Codec: on2 VP6
Quality: 700kbps
Frame rate: Same as source (24 or 30)
Size: Widescreen/HD - 560x315
Fullscreen/SD - 420x315
Keyframe Placement: Every 15 frames
Audio Codec: mp3 @ 128kbps stereo audio

There is an application called "Speed Switcher" where you can throttle back your loading speed to see what a DSL user would experience vs a cable user. check that out if you want to run some tests.

Think about your end use... you mention a large screen size- that can be hard to have look good... it's really a push and pull between quality/data rate/size. H264 is a great codec IMO.

Thanks Mike!
560x315 at roughly 800k sounds pretty doable. I'm not familiar with the on2 VP6 codec, but I will look into it.
