Watermarks in Vegas

Hey chaps,

I've been searching for a while now on this forum and google and playing around in Vegas and I can't seem to find a solution to my watermarking woes, so please would someone offer some help if they might.

I've got some footage and the client has sent me their logo they want over the top as a watermark. They've sent me the logo as an EPS file, with black text on transparent background.

I've read that I need to convert it to a PSD in Photoshop to get it into Vegas 8, which I have done. I've dragged the PSD into Vegas and it's been added to the timeline on a new track I've created.

The problem is that the transparent background is now white.

Would someone please advise me of the steps I need to take to get it as a transparent watermark in Vegas. I'm sure it's pretty easy but I can't find the solution and it's making me frustrated.

Thank you very much.

If you have an older version of Photoshop (like before 6.0), you might need to separate their logo from the rasterized background (white) as a CUT > NEW LAYER > SAVE AS > PSD. When you do so, make sure you turn off the resulting white layer mask.

Then, import the new file into Vegas and place it in your SUPERS track (or any track that is above the layers where you need the watermark).

EPS DVD logo separated from white rasterized background with magic wand tool as new layer. White background turned off and saved as PSD. Imported to Vegas as PSD, made top video track over SMPTE bars at 20%.

If it runs through the entire piece, make the watermark run through the whole event or cut it into pieces and have it fade in and out at certain intervals. Transparency should be very low if it is full screen, but you can play with higher transparency levels if it is in the station id area (lower third, right corner).

Good luck!

Right-click on it, go to the Media tab, and set white as the background color for the alpha channel (near the bottom). For the type, choose one which works.

Otherwise, you don't need to make a PSD out of it -- in Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro, you should just be able to save or export it as a PNG, which carries an alpha channel. Then, there should be no need to set an alpha channel background color.

Yeah, .PNG files are great - just shove them into a Vegas project and their backgrounds are transparent, so easy and has so many uses.

David, does that same Media tab trick work on video too? I use a lot of multiple layers for my animation work, and all that Chromakeying each layer can get pretty slow - if I could simply point to a clip's alpha channel colour, I'd presume that would run a lot faster than Chromakeying?

It only works if there's an alpha channel embedded -- you can't use it as an ersatz keyer.

Thanks, David, I suspected I was hoping for too much! I'll do some experimenting and see whether my animation tools will generate video with imbedded alpha channels...

Floss, Vidlogo does look interesting, I may give it a try too.
