Does anyone know of a good way to project tv flickering on my subjects face? Any computer programs that project a patter for continuity reasons? anything?
You can gel a light and have a crew member slowly move something in front of the light. Experiment with different items and materials.
Or, if you have the character sitting close enough to the TV set in the scene, for the shots that the TV is not in frame, just crank up the brightness and play the program.
All depends on how much additional lighting you have in the scene, how stylized or realistic you want the flickering to look, and how sensitive your camera is. I'd definitely do plenty of tests before the day of shooting the scene.
Another way - I bought a string of white mixed with blue LEDS for xmas, that have a variety of flashing patterns, some slow, some fast.
Post xmas I got a piece of foam and pushed them all through it. Then using the patterns control switch to get fast or slower. Works like a charm. I stuck cardboard around it, like an eggcrate to kill the extra spill. Grip clip it to anything.
