Washing out background colors using 16mm film.

Currently I'm directing a senior thesis using 16mm film shot with an Arri-sr. I'm about to run several test shoots in the next few weeks and need advice as to what film stock to use in order to achieve my desired look. The majority of my film will be shot outside in daylight and I need a way to wash out the background colors while retaining the vivid colors of my actors. I've had extensive meetings with my cinematographer but neither of us can find a solution beyond filters. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You could over expose the background while keeping the subject lit properly. How washed out are you talking about? Just a lower contrast than the subject? If so, you could light the subject a bit more contrasty in comparison to the background. Sadly I don't have enough experience with other 16mm film stocks to give any advice on that.
