Was on the set of the CBS show NCIS this week

They were getting all of the dialogue on Lectro 200 wireless with Sanken lavs.

There were using a Sennhieser MKH60 for ambiance.

I had a headset on and the audio sounded really good. I was amazed as it was outdoors on the beach with lots of noises from the city.

The sound guy Kevin said that they would prefer to boom but the DP gets wide shots and close ups on every scene so they have to use lavs.

The sound mixer, Steve Bowerman, is my customer. He uses a Deva IV as his recorder. Did you get a chance to check out his cart? It's really cool. Kevin is a really nice guy. Everyone on that show seems to be really nice. That's a great sound crew, and it's cool to hear that you got to go there. Were you at the stages in Valencia, or were they on location.

They were in MDR in the beach area of the marina.

Steve was all business but I did chat with Kevin a lot and he was very cool indeed.

It was a cool experience but I have to admit I would not enjoy working 12+ hour days.   I was on the set for 11 hours and they still had another location to move to so they must ave had a 15+ hour day at least.

Of course, I have no idea what they get paid. Perhaps they LOVE working all those hours. :)

So Dave, can you tell us what he has on his cart that makes it so cool? (I'm not being sarcastic, I'd really like to know since I don't have the opportunity to visit the set...though I would love to. ;-) )

Well, it's a completely custom job. It was originally designed by Geoff Patterson, the sound mixer on Deadwood. There are only 3 or 4 of them in existence. It has a lot of clean lines, and some clever hidden compartments for running cables. It's really hard to explain if you haven't seen it.
