was I just scammed....

bought a dvx100 off a guy on ebay. Ratings were great tons of feedback. Communication was great too. We were working on a buy it now price. So he was supposed to ship yesterday and I asked for tracking number today, and this is the email he just sent me...
Hey August,

I was not able and won't be able to ship the camera as planned. Yesterday, my brother gave the camera to USPS to ship to you but while placing the box on the counter, the clerk dropped the camera it. I asked him to come back with it so i can check it before shipping it to you. During the check up, I realized a few things did not work properly. So, I am working with the post office to have the insurance pay for the repair or replace it. So, I think it's best I return the funds to you; not knowing the full extent of the damage.*

I will send refund to you later today.

Sorry,

Onix

Unless I am misreading, USPS had a mishap with the camera which damaged it, so he has offered to refund your money, rather than ship you a product with unknown damage.

So, if he refunds you, sounds like an unfortunate incident and good business on his part to let you know (less savory characters might have just shipped it to you anyways without telling you).

You just got that email, so wait and see if he refunds... Based on what you said about his feedback and ratings, and that email you posted, looks ok to me (so far)... just wait for the refund.

Later,
Jason

If you paid for it through paypal you should be able to just dispute the transaction if it comes to that.

how are you getting scammed? Could be a true story, could be he doesn't want to sell it to you anymore for whatever reason (maybe price was too low?) As long as you get your money back you should be happy. If you see him relist it at a higher price in a week then you can complain, but it would probably just be a waste of time. Just move on.

story just sounds made up. I feel like he's going to say he refunded me, and I'm not going to see it, and him say, well I don't know what to tell ya bc I did.. Or like wait for usps to refund him which can take up to 60 days then give me my money then.. It's already been like 6 hrs.. Just a little nervous.. I know I shoyld gi e it at least a day... Idk

through pay pal. it was a buy it now offer.. i actually messaged him and asked if he was interested in a buy it now, and he gave me an offer and i said deal.. so he canceled the auction.. therefore my only option to pay for it was through pay pal, i selected purchasing "goods" bc i was not able to select "ebay" bc it asked for listing number.. so this is where im afraid i could get screwed..

If you ordered through paypal you should be fine. It may take a few weeks to get your money back but their dispute system is pretty good. For big ticket items they sometimes hold the money until they can verify the transaction took place so he might not even really have your money yet. If you don't hear anything by tomorrow I'd contact paypal.

Don't worry. He'll probably refund the money. If not, be sure to include all details to Paypal and include all of his messages. If your Paypal account was funded by a credit card, you also have the option of disputing the charge with your credit card issuer.

While Paypal does offer some protection for buyers, it is substantially less than when you buy through eBay using Paypal. That's why eBay has like 30,000 messages and notices reminding you not to ever do business with eBay sellers outside of eBay. Which is what you did...

On the other hand, if it were a scam, it would make more sense that he would say that you have to wait until insurance pays him before he'll refund you. So it could go either way.

Hopefully he'll get you the refund ASAP and all will be well.

The reason they have 30,000 messages and notices reminding you not to ever do business with ebay sellers outside of ebay is because then ebay doesn't get the double cut (ebay fees + paypal fees)... they just get paypal fees...

Just file the complaint with paypal. But if you bought it from a guy with no feedback you could get screwed. Hope you paid via credit card via paypal, that way you can dispute the charge. Paypal will always side with the guy who disputes his cc charge.

I'd say this is getting blown out of proportion. It sounds like the seller has been very communicative and is willing to offer a refund...before conclusions are jumped to, why don't you just see what happens? From the responses in the thread, if you don't get one...you know what to do.
