Warning! Warning! We got Fried!

Just wanted to let everyone know that yesterday we were hit by lightening, which fried, fricasseed, and sauteed just about every electronic doo-dad we own. It actually hit our watermain, shattering the pipe and leaving us without running water in the house until today. (We did have plenty of rainwater though - about 10 inches in less than 12 hours - after we collected a couple of trashcans full of that, we could at least flush the toilets ) Anywho, the bolt followed the pipe up to the house and surged through it leaving nothing plugged in untouched. Both of our desktop computers were sizzled, as were the printers, the scanners, and the sound system on the hubby's editing system. All of which were plugged into surge protectors - expensive ones! Luckily, both hard drives are OK, we just have to get everything that surrounds them replaced and/or fixed. We also lost one TV, all the VCRs, the DVD players, the surround sound to the entertainment center, the phones, and the transformer on the air conditioner - just to name a few of our fused items. (Fused literally in some cases!)

Its too bad no one had a camera at that exact moment, though. Our neighbor across the street actually saw it. She said the lightening streaked down and hit the ground and caused a HUGE fireball. That was followed by a loud "crack" and "boom". I was still in bed asleep, so I only caught the "crack" and "boom" which shook the house and almost knocked me out of my bed. Oh, yea, and almost scared both my cats and me half to death!

And so, to the moral of this sad tale. BACK UP YOUR COMPUTER DATA RELIGIOUSLY!!!! (We did - WHEW!!!) And if there is going to be bad weather in your area UNPLUG EVERYTHING YOU OWN!! (How I wish we had!) Save yourselves and all your electronics and PULL THOSE PLUGS!

Oh, and when you call your husband (or wife) to let them know what happened, warn them that there will be a firetruck in front of the house to avoid seeing them look like this ! Unless, of course, you enjoy seeing them look like  ...

wow, that is shocking news! You know, it could of been worse. That must really suck to loose all of those electronic devices. The good news is you made backups and you guys are okay including your cats.

Moonwind- You MUST live in Florida...northeast Florida maybe? I had the same thing happen to me, but I have no idea if the lightning struck a water main. I just know the house shook, made my teeth rattle, and I lost three tv's, 2 dvd players, 2 vcr's, a pc, three phones..... I dont know why, but things like the fridge, stove, microwave, a/c and washer and dryer were fine. Just all my other stuff, fried. It was a bad day....

Everyone here does know that the better UPS/surge companies guarantee your equipment, right? Sometimes it is a pain to find in these days of one-brand per store, but look around and don't treat all surge/UPS the same. Ironically, the good ones often don't cost anymore, you just can't buy them at Walmart.

..some of the garantees do not cover in case of a direct lightning hit to the property or structure it is in. the companies know better than to think that lightning is going to cross a mile or so gap between earth and sky.. and then see a little 1/5 inch gap in a surge protector and get scared and run away or something. be sure to look for a gaurantee that doesnt exclude a direct hit!

man that sucks!!! A few years a go my parents house got hit, the lightning jumped from a tree into an old phone line and fried everything, me being young at the time thought it was awesome, I got a new and better stereo out of the deal!!! Anywho, have fun pickin' out all new toys! I mean sh!t you pay through the a$$ for insurance mind as well use it!

Well, let's just pray it doesn't happen again...I can't bear to think what would happen if you were scared "half to death" twice.

Sorry to hear this, glad everyone is ok....that's the important thing. Things can be replaced, lives cannot.

Are there any surge protectors available that will protect against a lightning hit like the one described? If so, would they cost as much as the equipment they are protecting?

Sounds like the best option is to unplug. But, that assumes you know it's coming. Yeah, right. :undecided

some monster surge protectors will replace stuff that is plugged into them if they fail, but Moon glad you made it out ok. Good thing it sounds like your DVX made it out alive as well.

Thank you all for your good wishes! Yes, Terry, we were lucky the house wasn't hit. I lost everything I owned in a fire in 1995 and it would have just been too much to do a repeat in 2005! And since one of our cats went through that fire, I'm glad they are OK, too, BlueSpider! I'm still not too sure about me, though - another 1/2 might just do me in, Larry. :undecided What was really wierd about the strike was - we have a 2-story house, a huge oak tree and huge magnolia tree in the front yard, yet the strike missed all the "tall stuff" and hit the ground instead. Left a big dam hole in the yard, too! And the pipe was PCV, not metal. So I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out why it hit there. Not that I'm complaining as it would have probably been 100 times worse if it had hit one of the trees or the house.

thartley - We live in Mississippi, so y'all probably got the same storm that hit us. My sympathies right back to you! I think our dryer might be partially fried, but all the other big things survived, including our larger TVs. According to the electrician that came out to fix the AC and the breaker box area that sizzled, big things can take more of a surge and some items have extra protectors in them. Either that or we had some "extra protection" :engel017:

You are so right about the insurance, Buck. The hubby figured out the secret code for all insurance companies - "Find Any Way Not To Pay!" We're waiting to see if we have enough out-of-pocket costs to make it worth it to file a claim. We've also reported the damage to FEMA, so we might get something out of it.

HansK - You did it, you caught the lightening storm! Oh, the hubby said he's thinking about buying an ASIMOV and programming it to go around unplugging everything when a storm comes.

Once again, thanks all! We now have one computer back and we've been toy buying today. (That IS fun!) We are supposed to get more bad weather next week. I think I'm going to go outside and see if I can blow it in another direction!

Moonwind, I live in Alabama... The same storm fried my new Sony "upscaling" DVD player, some 100 days into its pathetic 90-day warranty. :(

Lesson learned... time to upgrade the surge protectors and backup the hard drives.
