War Of The Worlds

'....didn't See anyone else around here doing that....Good luck on your low budget features and I hope you are not treated to such pernickety nitpicking upon release of your flawless films.'

'I'm simply arguing against small-minded inimical belittling criticism.'

Personal attack may not be the words I'm looking for. how about 'Give us a break will ya?'

Drop the attitude? Try not and take someones personal opinion on a film as an insult or assualt on you? Whenever someone starts busting out the 'No one around here can do this......' or the 'Good luck on your low-budget features' I can usually predict the chain of events.

And the small-minded comment is not warranted, is it?

Bottomline? Keep it friendly.

I didn't care for wotw too much, and I all the Physics babbling in the world wouldn't make me think any different. Hollywood SHOULD be held up to very high standards as there are millions of dollars and thousands of people working on the film. The films SHOULD be damn near infalliable. Not to say everything has to be real, because that would be boring. But like MMM said, certain things like the camcorder still being on will take the avg person out of the movie. And thank god Speilberg came around, I ALMOST FORGOT ABOUT SLAVERY!! HOLOCAUST?? WHAT'S THAT?! They don't even teach this in schools anymore.

Maybe this is why the Video camera survived - also ITS A F*%KING SUMMER MOVIE FER CHRISSSAKES, JUST ENJOY IT, OR DON'T. If you want a physics lesson go to cal tech

Actually a "physics lesson" is just the tip of the iceberg.

When a major plot point is flawed by changing the way the original movie (book) went, that is no minor oversight. It's insulting to the audience (if they notice it) to display such wanton ignorance of the story, just to have some cool visuals of creatures beaming and ships coming out of the ground.

If their ships were already here, then they would have known about the microbes and planned for it. It makes the ending even more anti-climactic than it already is.

Just like with continuity, the story should make sense, scientific or not.

okay - I guess you guys win - feel like I'm arging about the merits of bad boys 2 - whatever. Ps. John...I'm mr. low budget - don't understand the "chain of events" comment.

Just be nice and we'll all get along just fine. Are we done?

I have to agree (nice take KING and SLIM)

I dont care what the world is; if pigs can fly then so be it...

But dont violate the wolrd. This is an issue of plausiblility. You must keep the rules of the created world in tact.

I loved WOW; but it is not without flaws. And Slim says it best 'Hollywood should be held to damn near 'infalliable standards'.

I agree.

I remember when that little girl in Jurassic 2 did the back flip gymnastic routine and beat down the raptor? I was in shock. That ruined the entire film for me right there. It completley destroyed the created world.

This is true. We can assume it was an EMP but how do we know what technology the aliens were using?

We don't.

We have'nt a clue what is happening. And that keeps the world in tact, does'nt it?.

As bad as 1941 is; I love it.

It's a childhood thing for me; the effects, the era, the cast......

Great stuff; no matter how bad.

I won't go so far as to say that I love it...but it does have it's charm.
For the most part I'm evenly split on the Genius/Overrated debate going on in the other thread (I think both of those are a bit hyperbolic, so it's not a great choice).

But one thing I'll say about Speilberg (and I think 1941 embodies this) is that he's not afraid to tackle different stories, and different genres. There is something to be said about a man who can take something like 1941, Jaws, Amistad, and even War of the Worlds and tell them all in his own visual style (which is pretty consistent throughout his work). I mean, those are all very different stories...but they're tied together by his style.

In that way he reminds me of Kubrick, who crossed just about every genre but was still able to interject his own style. We all know what a 'Speilberg film' is. The thing that impresses me is that the term 'Speilberg Film' doesn't tell you what the story is....just the style.

agreed - didn't get what he was "doing" (actingwise) in Hulk but thought he was standout in Chopper (although it's not a first date film)

Damn james...i just watched the Prey Alone trailer...nice f'ing work!
Looks good.

(sorry that was a bit off topic here...)

Never saw Chopper. I saw Hulk, and yeah..he wasn't bad...but he was very forgettable (not what you want from your lead I would guess)

thanks for that luis. much appreciated.

Chopper is very good but pretty hardcore - I thought I'd hate it but caught it on tv one night. Bana is superb in it - very memorable and "alive" - and the movie has great scenes. Clearly the real life character he was playing, Mark reed, was one disturbed individual.

A computer lip reading in 2001? That's credible scientifically?

I actually think 2001 made very good predictions on the future considering when it was made. At the rate things were travelling then, commercial space travel was looking very relistic in 2001. In the end, the first commercial space trip was around then - 2001 or 2002. I was actually refering to the silence in the vacuum of space, the way they explain how they have gravity in space, the believeable designs of basically everything - ships, pens, costumes - no tin foil suits!

I wasn't trying to have a dig at you, I just don't think anyone should be above critism. I did think WOW was a really good film, one of the best of the year, but IMO was let down by little, unbelieveable things, oh and the ending!

BTW, your film looks awesome james! Have you started a thread on it - I hope there are no unbelieveable little details in it

Random thoughts... James, that's nice. Love the aural and visual assault. Chopper was ugly but stunning. Bana was key. See it for him alone. Love escaping with Spielberg's films, but in pain when he trys to make me cry. Go easy with the score! (I'm not crying, that's my ears bleeding.)
