War Of The Worlds

I like the bit when Vader burns up....hehehe... wasn't expecting it to be so ....gruesome.

...I did laugh quite hard shortly after, at his "NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!" moment!

i thought it looked great but it wasn't exciting at all. story couldn't grab me for a moment.
also the long scene in tim robbins house was just dumb. i mean these aliens come and "exterminate"everything and all of a sudden they go scouting inside that house. first the weird alien drone then 4 actual aliens and to top that the drone arm comes back again. it was like watching the raptor scene in jurrasic park but with aliens.

but damn did it look great :D

I love how it was told through the eyes of one family and never going beyond that...leaving everything unexplained, or unknown because you just cannot know from thin air... and the only other way to explain? through the footage of the tv reporters... that was brilliant. it was just right.

people in the movie house were moaning at some of the scenes...i'd heard about these things happening during movies but i'd never really seen or heard it.

When people were running up that hill when the battle was going on...people were like "what the hell". Off the top of my head it happened during the Infamous "Peanut butter" scene...The van driving thru the stalled vehicles. The whole scene where they were in the Tripod Cage...etc.

Very weird experience.

Finally saw it. Summing up:

• Interesting idea, very well executed.

• Many little annoying plot holes and unrealistic bits that nearly ruined the whole film for me.
eg, when TC goes to kill TR in the basement, he takes no weapon and doesn't try to surprise him or anything. Wouldn't you if you were trying to kill a huge guy armed with a shovel.
eg, the working camcorder of course!

• Some CGI was very good indeed, some other effects including practicals weren't right:
eg the amount of white smoke coming from the tank barrels. Tanks don't use gunpowder anymore!

•Thought the ending was too cheesy. I didn't mind the bacteria part, but not how mummy is waiting in the door and everything is fine. Also thoose US soldiers at the end would blow the crap out of the dying killer alien, not shout "clear" while it was still alive. The situation wasn't "clear" at all.

I'm not sure how I feel about this one. I came into it a bit late so I lost alot of the building up to the alien invasion. I just couldn't buy into it like I have some other alien movies. Obviously the fx were breathtaking and the acting was awesome, I just found myself not believing in alot of the story. I was really rooting for this movie too, but overall I wasn't too impressed. Also, I bet Tim Robbins LOVED the lines he got "Occupations never work out, everybody knows that, it's been proven for thousands of years"...Or something to that effect. I wonder who HE was thinking about? Entertaining, but a bit unbelievable.

if i wus an invadin force from another planet....set on colonizing an alien planet...id probly do a little bit'o'research on that there planet...fer sure..like..we should probly test the air, and the water...make sure its drinkable and all...oh and yeah, if it aint, bring along some of those little pellets we got that kill off all dem bacteria thingies that tend to run around on dem alien planets and jack our **** all to hell...this way i dont die and ****..

what dumb ass drinks the water from an alien planet anyway..stupid ****in aliens.

anyway, i still liked the movie alot. even with the thanksgiving/family renunion looking ending...i mean ****...it looks like those people were just chillin by the fireplace roastin marshmellows and singin xmas charols...wtf?!

anyway, i liked this movie alot even though it had some serious flaws....

the opening all the way to the battle on the hillside was pretty amazing...super hi energy and intense...those tripods were just ****in awesome to see..love the way the people exploded into dust, and the sound effects from the tripods..fun stuff...

and did anyone catch that we never heard the word "ALIEN"....ever! i thought that was cool...the closest we got to that was "from some place else"

i was skimming through this long ass thread..and saw some people asking what software was used for the effects...ILM uses maya for all their animation..and some inhouse software for simulation/dynamics/rendering...but that doesnt mean anything...they have that becuase they need a pipline that can handle the huge amount of data they are having to create. they had hundreds of artists/tech working on it...so they have different needs then what can be satisfied by any off the shelf program...

anyone with a copy of maya/xsi/3d max can create the same sort of effects as whats in that film. no problem...you just need the skill/know how...

And let’s not forget the trilobites of hard drive storage, the cost to buy/rent the computer and the time it takes,

im guessing that if you have a copy of maya/xsi/3dmax then you probably have a computer...and if you have a computer...you probably have some form of hard drive storage...anyway...

i wasnt saying anyone with a computer and a 3d app could tackle a project of such scale as WOW....i was more just saying that you could make visual effects with the same quality/look/feel as WOW with normal pc's and off the shelf apps.

if you have the horse power to edit/store a short film/music video/feature that you are working...then you have the basic technology for doing high end visual effects for those projects...vfx stuff is alot like digital filmaking nowadays...its trickled down to common person...its no longer only in the hands of the big vfx companies.

I watched the movie with my wife last weekend. She hates Tom Cruise. That being said, I generally liked the movie but a couple of things bothered me.

The van running was explained. But there are lots of gear heads who would've figured that out and past on the word.

The boy runs towards the battle like a moth to a lightbulb. What an idiot. They should have split the story line to show some lesson learned there, and not have him magically show up at the end, like the familly was interrupted from their thanksgiving meal or something.

There seems to be an ongoing theme with Tom Cruise to start out as a jerk, and redeem himself for the audience later on (see "Last Samurai").

Advice- when fleeing from a disaster- AVOID LARGE GROUPS OF PEOPLE.
There, I feel better.

That's what I was thinking when they first started getting zapped. RUN AWAY BUT NOT ALONG SIDE OF EVERYONE WHO's GETTING ZAPPED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hmm well it goes both ways he either starts as a confused person with many issue in life to a happy person in the end. or he goes from the perfect guiy to many troubles in front of him. collateral is like diffent becuase he was so uncaring about anything that when he got mad it resulted in psycho crusie. personally i've enjoy all his work in the last 4 years. i think minority report is what made me like cruise more.

I believe that was just a rumour. However, from the quality in the cinema I saw it, it could have been shot on Video 8!

Thats more or less why I questioned it, even though I kinda knew spielberg only uses film, and uses the same editor,i beleive, who always edits on flatbed, thanks for uncovering the rumor
