War Of The Worlds

Plots Holes - Who gives a F*** they're everywhere and cant be avoided. If you want it plot hole free you would have to watch a movie that went for millions of years from every angle of every objet on this earth (and the Aliens earth!) As well as hearing every sound every object makes. as that’s how long in actual fact the story went for. IMPOSSIBLE!.

There is a fabula that must be made into a syuzhet that goes for 90-120 minutes. If you spent all your time analysing plot holes and not actually analysing the film you wont get anything form it and you are wasting your time and will never (slowly) develop your own character/your beliefs in life.

Maybe its because I've seen all the sci-fi movies over the last 25 years. WOW brought nothing to the table that I haven't seen in other movies. The parenting angle was overplayed IMO. It was good filmaking...what else do you expect from Spielberg?, but I lost interest in the invaders after the first sequence in NJ.

You gotta explain that one.

What didn't WOW bring that others beofre had already done? I say finally someone made an alien invasion flick with some balls for starters.

The parenting angle was overplayed? Are you a parent? I am; and Ic an assure I would go to even greater lengths to protect my child and totally related to this element.

Care to elaborate on your 2 points?

We do hear alot about Plot Holes; can we name 5 films that dont have plot holes?

No really. Name a perfect film.

I don't have to like it just because you do!!

The entire 20 minute scene with Cruise-Daughter-Robbins hiding under the house reminded me of Signs. The scene included the aliens probing the area.....ala Jurassic Park and the raptors. WOW is a giant chase scene with special effects, I got no sense of plot other then RUN LIKE HELL!! And the mighty aliens who travelled across the galaxy with superior intellect overlooks the little amoebas...yea right. I got a kick out of the grandparents at the end who had the clean clothes and didn't seem bothered at all...they must have missed the rough stuff.

I swear, some of you forget these are formulaic money making vehicles and not attempts to make a masterpiece.

As for the sound design, I thought it was a little off because the first time we hear the roar of the tripod in the first act the camera looked up and all I saw was the tripod taking a dump on the city or a piss depending how you looked at it. Lots of laughter in my theater at that point.
Anyone else notice this?

The Tripod was taking a piss on the city? Huh? Scott you're losing me on this one.

Yes; you do have to like like it because I say so. I was just asking what you meant; jeez. Take it easy already.

I loved it this film. Fun fun fun.

Anyhow, I suppose my main problems are more with the script than with the direction,
Before you say that, read the script. I was shocked at how different the ending of the "Raiders of the Lost Ark" script was, as compared to the film Spielberg made. I wouldn't be surprised at all if some of the complaints you had about the script were all perfectly resolved in the actual script, but were changed in production...

What I want to know is ... the sound the "ship" made, that low, bone shaking sound ... did anyone else think it sounded like the noise a pissed-off camel makes, just dropped to a new bass low? (I mean that in a good way ... that sound was chilling). But I swear I've heard almost that same sound coming from a camel! Anyone know if what was used in foley?

Never heard a pissed off camel, but yeah, that was a bad ass sound.
I'm sorry, but any way you look at this film, you can't deny that it is a piece of good film making. If you don't like it, no big deal. Art is not meant to be liked by everybody. And while I would say that many Hollywood movies are just out for the money, Spielberg is not one of those people. I'm not saying he's not trying to make money, we all are, but there is a distinct difference between filmakers out for the money, and those out for the love of making films.

Anyone have a problem with how artificial the outside looked after they first left the basement? With all the red stuff and the strange light, I thought it was going to be a dream sequence or something and when it turned out it wasn't, I was a little surprised because in my mind in didn't match with any other scene in the movie.

It just didn't look right (poor cinematography?).

The EXT of the basement farm home was recreated on a soundstage; I noticed this element as well. It was a striking chnage form the location shots.

Dude. Bro. Your not even making sense.

"The difference between Tim Robbins character squared times Pi with a root value of Tom and Dakota is proportionate to the factor of Amanda Otto. And that equals disgusting."

I think this was a great film I really enjoyed it, I only had the same problem with the movie that most of you did, Robbie's miraculous return. The ending wasn't all that abrupt even though I guess a bit more could have been added. The into explained the ending and vice versa, we're just drops in the sceme of things just as things like water, bacteria etc are tiny to us, worlds within world that we really can never properly understand.

To people that say because aliens travelled to earth they should have been immune to everything? That makes no sense, they came for humans and didn't anticipate the little things that they could not have known anything about. We humans can travel to space, go around the world, have all kinds of crazy communication devices but more and more people each day die from all kinds of diseases we can't control. How many travellers in old centuries travelled around the world and died of random diseases that they never could imagine? The aliens in the movie aren't better than us, they basically are us. We eat all kinds of animals around the world and yet some animals carry diseases that we can't yet cope with, it would be stupid to say that because they can travel to earth they can't die from any disease or else we'd all be immortal right now.

I haven't read the full orignal book but when I was in the 3rd grade I read an adapted version of it and even did book report on it(LOL no one back then saw that coming), it wasn't a kids version just an adapted version and the funny thing was I forgot everything about it, the characters, the ending, everything, so this morning when I woke up I dug around around to find it and my version is a bit more clear on the what happened it says that it was definetly bacteria that killed then and man goes on to study the bodies of the aliens as well as the ships in order to learn something from them my version of the book ends like this:

"Man's view of the universe has expanded too, as a result of the Martian's attack. As my wife and I gaze at the heavens, we realize that if the astronomers are correct and if the Martians have reached Venus, it isn't impossible for man to travel to other planets too. And so, one day when the slow cooling of the sun makes the earth uninhabitable, as it must eventually do, man can continue his life elsewhere in this vast universe."

I think if the movie had ended more like that version of the book average Joe and Jill would be much more satisfied, a lot of people don't like being forced to draw conclusions on their own. I was disgusted when I left the theatre and heard a few people say things like:

"It was dumb, they just ran out of money and just ended the movie."

How can that guy who was older than me possibly think a Spielberg movie with Tom Cruise in it would just run out of money or waste that much money on a movie that had no real point? I just don't get how some people live day to day with such low intelligence.

But yeah great movie it was really fun and a much more raw feel to it than a lot of other Speilberg movies.

One thing I really liked was the lack of the word "Alien" or "Martian", etc. Because that would have just cheapened the whole thing.

A brilliant film, tainted by a cheap ending... I liked how the story was internalized but there were too many things left too vague and unmotivated.

There were apparently 2 people who figured out how to make their cars work in the world (outside of the US gov). I thought it would have been a better twist to make ONLY classic cars work, like they are missing some modern electrical part that leaves them uneffected. Also, every electronic device dies... except for some dude's cheap 1 chip camcorder.... hrrmmm...

That is nitpicking... my biggest issues were the son's motivation to head into what looked like certain death, the feeling was like Close Encounters, like he was being compelled by an alien force. He wasnt chasing after someone to help or saving somebody, just looked randomly suicidal.

The biggest critcism for me is the ending, sorry that was just cheap... there should have been SOME explanation in the story, not just voice over. How do machines get a cold? Was it just the operator? I dont really care that there was no big epic battle in the end, I just wanted 10 more minutes of story. Why not have the news van return? That would not have strayed from the style and that is a device he had already used...

Overall, I liked it and will see it again but it flamed out in the end for me...
