War of the Worlds

My uncle (Easton Michael Smith) was just hired by Tom Cruise to work as a set designer on "War of the Worlds". He said it supposed the largest movie production to date. It supposedly has an overbloated government type budget?

He is not sure about who is in it yet, but Cruise is starring and I guess producing also, anybody heard anything else?

Is there any kind of government budget that isn't overbloated?

Oh right, education.

Re: War of the Worlds

Well lets see: (according to IMDB)

Spielberg is Directing
Koepp is writing
Dakota Fanning apparently is onboard
Kathleen Kennedy is Producing
John Williams is Scoring
Janusz Kaminski is DP'ing
Michael Kahn is Editing

Re: War of the Worlds

Have you guys heard of the deal Tom Cruise made with the Studio? He wants a piece of the cake as well. I don't remember the percentage he wants (as I just saw the headlines), but will give him around $100 million.

I'll see if I can find the newspaper with it.

All the best

Fidel.

Re: War of the Worlds

This is tangentially related. Here's a link to Orson Welles' radio shows with RKO. If you scroll down you can download his infamous War of the Worlds broadcast where he created mass hysteria from a fake radio broadcast.

That's awesome. I heard it once before, a long time ago, and I've been dying to hear it again. Classic.

Re: War of the Worlds

Small world, Your uncles name sounded familier..so i looked him up in imdb. i have worked on 3 of the same movies your uncle has worked on. And have friends that have worked on a bunch of the others. im sure i would recognize him, we generaly work with the same group of people.

anyway, Rick Carter is the production designer. he has done some pretty amazing work. this movie should look killer!

the only thing that worries me is the 2005 release date. just seems like its being a bit rushed. would be nice if they took a bit more time to get it all worked out.

Re: War of the Worlds

You guys told more of what is going than he did. He has been here visiting and I was pumping him all the same questions you answered and he had no idea who was doig what except Spielberg & Cruise. He negotiated his pay with Cruise I know that much.

I just hope they don't screw it up and that they do it right.

I thought the same thing, even late 2005 seems too soon.

What movies did you work on that he was working on Rich?

" What movies did you work on that he was working on Rich?"

Re: War of the Worlds

As taken from AINTITCOOLNEWS as from TAKEN FROM VARIETY AND HOLLYWOOD REPORTER:

* Dakota Fanning will play Tom Cruise's daughter in Steven Spielberg's WAR OF THE WORLDS.

* Spielberg's WAR OF THE WORLDS is filming in New York City from mid-November to the end of the year.

Re: War of the Worlds

My uncle started work yesterday as one of the Set Designers. They have a hell of deadline to shoot for!

Re: War of the Worlds

I talked with my uncle this weekend. My brother may be going out there in March as an intern on the Last two weeks of shooting for the construction part.

He is going to try to get me an editing internship for a week or two around the same time.

I'll keep you all posted.

Re: War of the Worlds

This almost struck me as a backward step for Spielberg. I felt the same way when Tarantino decided to adapt Elmore Leonard; I felt the closest to the spirit of Leonard on the screen had come from Quentin's original work, in which he took what he liked from Leonard and made it his own. Spielberg has a similar relationship with UFO movies. He reinvented them with CLOSE ENCOUNTERS and E.T., taking our concept of aliens away from the WAR OF THE WORLDS model. It's odd; but it'll be interesting to see what he does with the story.
