War Films

I'm loving this, John! I seem to remember that the Japanese also executed a lot of the marines after they'd surrendered - or started to? Gotta hit the books!

A Midnight Clear.

Takes place in the waning days of the German defeat. The most un-war like war movie ever. Gary Sinise, Ethan Hawke, Peter Berg, Kevin Dillon, etc. Great cast, great direction, great.

I haven't seen that one, or if I did it was 'way back in the day. box art had a dead soldier gripping a medal of the Iron Cross, correct?

That's the one - Sam Peckinpah. I would also recommend Brotherhood, or Tae Guk wai, a korean war film, very good.

i started preproduction on a war film wont go into detail specially if that might be the new contest. :-D :-D!!! only john Hudson knows whats up....

I usually check the movies section but I guess I got behind and missed all this war movie talk. I think that is all I have in my DVD collection with a few exceptions. Some of my favorites obviously include SPR and BOB. My favorite old war movie is The Great Escape and is the reason why I got into making WWII movies and it is why I got into reenacting WWII.
I saw someones post about them wishing their were other movies that didnt feature the US and they wanted to see something about Stalingrad. There is a movie called Stalingrad which focuses on a squad of Germans and their hardships in Russia during the battle. I believe it is in German with English Subtitles. http://imdb.com/title/tt0108211/
Tae Guk Gi is an excellent movie. Be sure to watch it in its original language and with english subtitles. A friend of mine watched it with the english dubbed over and he thought the acting was terrible in the movie, but didnt take in account that what he was hearing was not the actors.
Another movie I really liked is To hell and back. Incredible that all the stuff in the movie happened. I really enjoyed the book more though.
One of my favorite classes in college was "History in Film: Hollywood and War". We got to watch wwii movies in school. After we watched a movie we watched a episode of BOB.

I like the Wake Island idea. Has anyone seen either of these:

If I were making a WWII movie it would be the story of the Bedford Boys.

I have interviewed on camera several of the veterans from bedford and they just have fascinating stories to tell. It would be different than other D-Day type movies because you would actually care about the characters by time they hit the beach. I was thinking about focusing the movie on one of many sets of brothers in the company. Roy and Ray Stevens who were twins.

It would follow the two boys from growing up in Bedford, signing up for the national gaurd, training stateside, training in England for 2 years, and than the assualt and the first month in Normandy. I would also make the beaches look like they did on D-Day. The actual beach they landed on was around 300 yards from water to sea wall. They also landed at the most heavily defended part of Omaha Beach. Reading a few books about the 29th Division and D-Day really show you how things played out that morning. Its sad and terrible and hard to put on film what it was like. It would take too long to show what really happened that day because it took so long to get off the beach. Hours and Hours went by and some soldiers were just laying there or hiding and watched as their fellow soldiers were being torn to shreds by the machine gun fire. I would try to show as many things as I could about the beach landing. For instance, after firing a few rounds their rifles would jam and become useless. Many of them layed out their blanket once they got to a place where they couldnt be seen and they took apart their rifle and cleaned it. Some of them would fire a few rounds until their gun would jam and they would pick up another rifle and use that for a few rounds. I really dont want to get into a big discussion about SPR mistakes on this thread because there are whole websites and forums dedicated to that, I just want to make an awesome war movie about these soldiers and try to be as accurate as possible about the beach landing and not try to make it seem so action packed and quick.
Wow I think this might be my longest reply.

I would love to have War be the next contest on this Forum..
