War Films

... Stalingrad mentioned above (which, btw, was 1942-1943, mmm)

My 7th Dec 1941 was only a reference to when the USA joined the war. Before that, few US service men saw battle. That date didn't mean to be connected to Stalingad at all, the only link being no US fighting before that date OR in the Battle of Stalingrad.

Oh, well, sorry then :lipsrseal

And that's great, John :) I suspected sarcasm :cheesy: but I'm still glad it ain't about ignorace I've often met coming from americans...

As for the topic, I really don't know which 1 campaign to choose. Even which history period. I'd go HBO/Spielberg route and made a mini-series for each :)

My bad if I'm going off topic/rules, but I've always wanted to shoot a grand epic on Kublai Khan. Ending with his invasions of Japan.

Sort of like a "Last Emperor" except mine would be called "The First Emperor". :)

I saw a docu-series on the Mongols, and ever since then it has fired my imagination. However, I know it ain't got a bongos chance to get on the silver screen.
I doubt even Spielberg could get an all Asian cast, on that scale, with an Asian protagonist, (no Tom Cruise here) to be greenlit.

They are already doing the "Pass at Thermopylae" with the Spartans, so that one's off the books.

Ok. Back to WW1. How about the battle with "The Blackwatch" a Canadian regiment that was the first to be engaged in a chemical warfare attack in WW1 (at least that's what the doc said). They routed the Germans in a forest in the dark of night, against all odds. Preserving the line, saving the town from the advancing Germans, and giving the civilians time to organize a retreat. I forget the name of the forest.

Now you gotta hurry up and get some greenlightin' power John, before some hack takes your passion and turns it into Pearl harbour :)

I've been very hesitant to check this out. Films like this win a bunch of awards but if they're so good then why hasn't anyone heard of it, ya know? Maybe they were just better than the competition at said festivals? Why wasn't this in distro? Straight to DVD? Is it really that good?

John, I hear you. I had never heard of the film either. What attracted me to it was the cover art on the dvd box. Blockbuster only had one copy and it was always out, I mean always. Finally it came in and I snagged it right quick.

I was hoping to be entertained, but the film was so much better than I ever thought it would be. As you already know there are a lot of disappointments at your local video store. But the photography and the acting was great. Better than many big or bigger budget films.

It's a different kinda war film, in the sense that it takes a more intimate angle and of course it doesnt have the huge battle scenes you would find in studio films.

It's based on a true story as well.

I'm renting it today. I'm digging it.

Damn it. All rentals are out at BB and HV (Bastids)

So, I'm researching Wake Island and have come across numerous verbage of this:

"Barely an hour after the Philippine Clipper arrived back at Wake Island, the Japanese attacked and as several aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Naval forces bombed and strafed everything in sight, one lone Japanese attack plane spotted the Philippine Clipper docked at the Pan American base and strafed the helpless flying boat. A total of nine employees of Pan American were killed during the attack at Wake Island and all of the Pan American facilities were destroyed, so orders were given to get the Philippine Clipper back to stateside, immediately.

With over 90 bullet holes, the wounded and grossly overloaded (all remaining Pan American employees) clipper required 3 attempts at a takeoff before the Philippine Clipper finally limped into the air and off toward Midway, Pearl Harbor, then finally on to San Francisco (the Philippine Clipper landed in the San Francisco Bay, 3 days later on December 10th and its passengers gave the first eyewitness accounts of the war in the Pacific). "

I'm not saying to really go LIV TYLER style but having a romantic interest could work. I'd like to set-up a vibe that prior to the attack; these sailors and marines and civilianns were chillin, they were getting three squares a day, they were getting beer, there were getting leave...

Visitors were coming and going to the Island. It was a virtual south seas paradise perhaps. IN fact, I'd love to not only verify if there were any women, but part of the script would be the civilianns being killed (The employees) during the initial bombing raid.

THINKING out loud

Okay; I found something that says:

It was unreal. Only two hours earlier....

....as the seven-man crew....

.......of Pan Am's Philippine Clipper, they had been on a routine flight to Guam. Then came the unexpected message:

I'm loving this part! Definitely drive home the blindsidedness of the attack. I also like the angle of civilians being involved in the battle and it not just being military against military.

I'm not sure about the Liv Tyler love interest part, but it's still early in the brainstorming process. :)

I raided my father's library of WWII books and hope to get a chance this weekend to do some reading on Wake Island. Good stuff!

Yes yes yes

Approaching the ROMANTIC INTEREST part with great reservation and caution. I'm trying to locate a passenger list for that flight of passengers....

I like this:

"The Pan American Airways Philippine Clipper, which had spent the night of 7-8 December at Wake, embarked passengers shortly after sunrise on Monday morning,[1] 8 December, taxied out into the calm green of the lagoon, took take-off position, and at 0655 soared outward toward Guam. Ashore on Wake the usual 0600 reveille had broken out the Marines, all of whom were well rested after their Sunday of holiday routine.."

Naomi Watts. 'Nuff said.

Back to brainstorming:)

"**** war"
- Kirk Douglas on the set of Paths of Glory

Picked up Saints and Soldiers (thanks Rasquachemedia!). Good film. Amazing that they accomplished that with less than a million dollars.

Obscure fact: The camera loaders for Saints and Soldiers were Jerrod Hess and Jerush Hess. They wrote the script for Napoleon Dynamite and Jerrod Hess directed N.D. Small world.

Now back to planning this Wake Island film. :)

So I've been on the set for the past several days and am just catching up on this thread. A lot of great (and fun!) ideas.

Going back about four pages, are they really making a BoBros 2? How'nthhell did I miss that???

I love this account (found at http://www.mca-marines.org/Leatherneck/dec01wake.htm)

Earlier in the day, Lt David D. Kliewer spotted a Japanese submarine that had surfaced 25 miles off Wake. He fired his machine guns and dropped his 100-pound bombs at such a low altitude that bomb fragments ripped holes in his plane. He circled and watched as the submarine sank.

That's gotta be in the movie, though I think the focus should be on the Clipper and possibly the ending shot of the film is the Clipper touching down in safety.
