Hey guys,
My name is Rostislav, i'm keen on photography, that's the only thing i was shooting before i got my GH1 (transformed to GH13) and naturally i've became more interested in shooting video and that's how i found dvxuser, a wonderful resource and a community!

I want to get better at shooting&editing video, so i've posted my first best attempt, having said "best" i know its bad- its not steady, panning like a soccer mom with a dv camcorder, overusing slow motion, partly shot in the dark so tons of noise,
nevertheless, i would like to share my creation to get as much constructive criticism to be on the right track for better videos!

so any criticism would be greatly appreciated! thanx guys!

I liked it, especially the shot with the water coming in focus at 5:15. Near the beginning there was a shot of the woman getting a bit overexposed and you lost detail on her face so just be careful not to let too much light in (unless you are specifically going for that of course). Good work though, keep it up.

In my videos I never zoom during a shot anymore. I used to all the time and gave it up. If you need to zoom, I would edit it out and use only the pre-zoom or after-zoom footage. The reason to only use the before or after is to avoid a jump cut. If you use the before and after with something in-between it would work nicely though.

You already mentioned camera shake but, if you want, you could try honing your technique and use camera shake as a creative device like some movies do. It's a very subtle shake though and takes a very steady hand to make it so it isn't noticeable. I think that's the key with most cinematography, try to make the cameraman, camera, lighting, etc invisible to the viewer. Direct all the attention to the subject and story you're trying to tell.

Is it just me or is the sharpness, detail, and clarity of this video extremely good? Is this the hacked version of the GH1, or is it the regular footage straight from a new camera?

My first video ever truly recorded on any type of camera, geared for youtube, I was riding down the street in the backseat of my car, doing fast zooms in and out of business street signs and all that weird jazz, and luckily, for the entire 5 minutes or so, a christmas carol played on the radio with no one in the car saying a word. I was able to use the entire track as the sound, while I chopped the video all up, slowing down certain street signs, getting rid of all the zoomed out footage where the inside of my car was showing. End result was that "Here comes Santa Clause" was playing the whole time while slowed down shots of street signs like "Adult Bookstore XXX" and "The Hideaway Place" and "Providence Package Store" flashing through, ending with a shot of a church billboard that said something like "Jesus will save you." - the entire thing looked so gritty and all, bad camcorder, and I didn't plan it (I was just fooling with a new camcorder like a normal teenager) but it really turned out very effecting in a "shock" way, and really gave me a feeling that I'm good at picking a theme from an entire long shot of random footage, running with it, and editing it to turn it into something entirely new. Didn't help that I was just editing it on Windows Movie Maker. But it was a cool first-time experience.

Funny thing, I started with WMM also and although it seems limited now, it was all I needed to get hooked on film making. It's really not bad for a free program although Apple's free iMovie blows it away.

The shots you describe remind me a lot of the opening credits to "Man on Fire" with Denzel Washington. Fantastic movie by the way!
