I need some advice!
I have been doing a ton of research trying to resolve the final piece of a 6-cam HD/SD-SDI live mix remote system: the file based recoding tool that will keep my workflow swift within FCP once the "truck" pulls back into the garage.
Cost is a consideration, but so is the interface between the recorder and the user (used to pressing "record," not hooking up a laptop and launching apps and connecting cables, etc.). So I have looked at and—up to now—held off on the Io HD/MBPro/RAID combo. Same with the Matrox MXO2. As for others, the P2 route via theAG-HPG20 looks good, but trouble in terms of longer-than-realtime conversions from AVC-I to QT native formats (ProRes422). I must have researched two dozen other turnkey devices with formats from J2K to MPEG2 to Uncompressed...and still do not have a clear winner. Our typical use is for SD, delivered on DVD, but I would like this system to be able to bring in some revenue for HD clients.
The system features 6 JVC GYHD250 cameras connected with Camplex Hybrid Fiber/RG cables supporting HD or SD, mixed with a Panasonic AV-HS400N HD/SD switcher—all SDI. No on-cam recording is expected here.
Finally, related to a single product specifically, does FCP perform acceptably with MPEG2 VBR, i-frame only content?
