I don't know of any non-registered copies for sale other than through Adobe. I think the latest version is 7.0
After Effects is a great program. To me, it has been designed the way an editing and special effects program should be designed, through and through. Once you get used to the workflow and capabilities, it seems like the granddaddy of all other programs, as far as compositing and layering effects. It is essentially Photoshop for video.
Premiere Pro has come a long way toward being better, in a compositing sense, because it has become a lot more like After Effects. The only thing Premiere Pro has as an advantage over After Effects is in it's ability to play and manage clips much more dynamically, with playback of entire sequences and projects being easily done. After Effects is more geared toward fine tuning special effects on a microscopic level.
Good luck
John
