Want a mic on speakers podium.

Hi;
I will be filming a speech with a DVX100, and I want to use a mic that will be on the speakers podium.
Cables are ok (as I assume wireless would be far too expensive).
The main thing is that the audio is clear, with no hisses, buzzes, etc.
Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced mic that will work for this purpose.
Appreciate any advice. Thnx.

Is the speech being given to a large audience? If so, is there already a mic on the podium for amplification to the room? If so, can you take a feed from the mixer that mic is plugged into?
Sorry for more questions than answers...
If the answer is no to all of the above, then you have a choice of a podium mic or a lav.
For podium I'd just go with the good ol standard Shure SM58...

Cables sound better than wireless. Wireless is more trouble than it's worth most of the time.
Stick with a good quality cable and make sure that all equipment is plugged into the same power
and you shouldn't have any buzzes or hums, etc. If you do, feel free to declaim my bad advice.

SM58 is a fine microphone for many applications. Should not cost above $100.00US.

I agree with wells, wireless can have drop outs or sound can incress volume and deecress. I like the SM58 the SM57 works well two. Be shure that none of your XLR is not going over any power cables even the smallest extention cord or you might get a 60hz hum.

Hi Guys;
I want to thank you for the mic info.
There will be no other mics -just mine. So the SM58 sounds perfect for this project.
AND thanks for the advice about the power and cables! I certainly didn't know that, and it is great advice! I appreciate it!!! ...

My other job is a stagehand in Local IATSE so I do lots of jobs for conventions in the convention center and hotels here in Vegas. You'd be amazed at some of the setups we do with power crossing audio, video and computer lines. It really depends on the facility and how "clean" their power is. Some places are horrible, Flamingo, RIO... others are great, Mandalay Bay.
Next show I work I'll snap a few photos of audio cables laid down next to HV power lines..:)
It is of course better to be safe than sorry and avoid if possible.:thumbup:

Dare I say it, especially if your cable runs are long, you may be better off with a cheap condenser mic that has a hotter output. Likely better sound with the DVX preamps, too. But it may be overkill.

I'd suggest, for podium use, something with a fairly wide pickup pattern, as speakers tend to move around. And if they're presenting slides, they'll likely be talking at least some of the time facing them. In such a case, putting the mic a bit off to the side - in the direction of the screen, but pointed at the mouth - can sometimes be best.
