This is going to be a dumb question for many here, but exactly what is a spec music video? I'm guessing an unauthorized or unofficial one? Wouldn't that run into copyright problems?
 
Spec is short for speculation, as in just something you do to demonstrate your skills with no expectation of actually selling the piece, just using it as a calling card. Most add agencies have shelves full of spec commercials from potential directors many are for real products but no one really worries about copyright, since these are just for demonstration purposes only.

Same with a spec music video don't expect to be able to sell a video you’ve made based on the song of a popular band, but if its really good, and you can get it into the right hands, then who knows? You may find yourself helming their next music video.

make sure you copyright the video before you send it anywhere! The next time you turn on Mtv and you see your concept from the video you sent the label on the tube your gonna be ticked off! LOL! It happened to a guy I work with. He is good friends with a Hip Hop Music Video Director BENNY BOOM that just about a lot of the stuff you see on MTV and BET he has directed hip hop oriented that is. My boy would send Benny treatments and/or videos that he shot and directed hoping that Benny would be interested in his work...he was interested all right. He stole some of his ideas!!! The funny thing is that Benny Boom is my Fratrernity brother, I have been trying to get a hold of him as well.
