wandering blindly into location sound

hey folks,

like many, I am competent in the video aspect and nearly clueless when it comes to audio. i have a friend who is kind of a sound guy but he is mostly into composing (he does record some room tones/ambient and voiceover for me with his Oktava MK-012) so my plan is to get a shotgun with boom pole, I just need some rec's on accessories. So far, I've settled on the Rode NTG-2 because I don't mind dropping the extra $20 for optional battery power and the $200 12.7' Gitzo boom pole.

This is where you guys come in. Yet on my wishlist: 1. reasonably priced schockmount 2. windscreen (Rycote softie? all i need?)

An nice 25 ft. right-angled XLR is included with the Rode so that is taken care of. Does anyone have any recommendations on shockmounts for the NTG-2? And is a Rycote softie a decent all situations windscreen?

With all this stuff my budget is quickly shrinking so price is a concern. Is this all I would need? Open to suggestions.

Cheers, Cam

For on-camera use a Rycote Softie mount CCA and a Softie is the ideal set-up.

For off-camera use a RYCOTE S-series is about the same price with better shockmounting and protection.

wow thanks random, thats basically what i was looking at getting at a lower price. the only thing i am worried about is the shockmount. is that standard rode shockmount good, anyone have experience with it?

Well we've used the Rode shockmounts around here plenty, and they will definitely work for ya. Obviously there are much higher end ones, but especially if budget is a factor it's a great one to start with. And you can always upgrade pieces of your set up as you go.

thanks mike, but its a bit out of my price range. random, thats a nice package and includes most of the stuff i wanted except the boom is a 10' Rode instead of the 12' Gitzo. damn, but still a great package. Have you seen good results with the Rode? Does it transfer a lot of vibes to the mic?

thanks again

Well for me it depends on what you'll ultimately have on the end. For just a shockmounted mic, either way would go well. We tested the 12' carbon fiber Gitzo in house with a zepplin and ntg-3 on it, and it was really REALLY flexing... but you save a pound or so in weight, which your boom opp would love you for. So it's kinda half and half. The RODE is a good pole though
