Walter Graff's September seminars

So as I'm sure many of you know, Walter Graff has put together a location lighting seminar that he's planning to give several times in September, on Saturdays and Sundays. And after reading about it on his website I am pretty interested in going.

Now for me this would mean flying in to NYC, but I do have a free ticket and wouldn't mind making a little vacation around it. But one thing is that the dates are listed as tentative and subject to change depending on demand, scheduling conflicts, etc.

This is certainly understandable, but I was hoping to get Walter's attention and ask, is there a way, if I start making arrangements to fly in over a weekend, that I could be fairly sure to do a seminar on one of those days? Like if you could say, "Well, September XX is one date that will definitely happen," or "On the weekend of September XX-XX, if Saturday doesn't happen, then Sunday will so you would get in on one of those days."

If things are a little too uncertain to say anything, no prob. I will at least get your DVD and my own kit and start experimenting, and who knows, you might see me at another seminar somewhere down the line.

In any case thanks for being a great resource for us in various ways

This is best as a private topic not a public topic. I emailed you privately.

Yes I am giving some day long low budget film style lighting classes in September where we will be doing various set-ups in an apartment as if we are doing a feature with a limited lighting (incandescent and HMI) and a DVX100A. I have found that as much as one would like to do a particular day, the world is never on the same schedule. So I throw out a bunch of days and find that some work better than another (September 10 and 11 are good days to sign up as of today) so I ask others who sign up on days that don't get much interest to move to days that do. I just dropped the last two days f September because no one wanted them. It works out in the end for about 98% of those that sign up. The rest I simply refund the money and offer them something sometime in the future.

So many people have asked for such an event. I think it's a great idea because it becomes a team of people interested in working together to create something rather than siting around watching one guy do all the work and never really getting a feel for it. Frankly, for me, after twenty years lighting everything from four presidents, programs for four networks, and a few dozen stars in features and the like, I still walk into a project just like many of you, wondering what will be my course of action. Yea the same butterflies that anyone gets, although once I see it, the path becomes clear. Working with a small group allows me to present my thoughts then let the group add to the mix. It becomes a collaboration and in the end everyone including me learns a thing or two for the next time.

True that. An earlier attempt to contact Walter via the bluesky address was fruitless, but I failed to appreciate that this board has its own message system which would have been entirely appropriate. Apologies to everyone for my misuse of this forum!

Now for something actually relevant at least to those of us who are considering coming in from out of town. Does anyone have any ideas about finding halfway affordable, yet decent lodging in NYC during that second weekend of September? I gather it's the high season, as many of the places I found through usual channels are charging an arm and a leg. And it's tricker setting up nice lighting with only one arm and one leg. The best I can think of now is maybe taking a gamble on Priceline or the like. Another possibility is if anyone coming in might be interested in sharing a room and splitting hotel costs, please post here (depending on numbers, it may be in the common interest) or drop me a line. Thanks.

I get about 200 emails a day and answer everyone of them. What address did you use?

Hey Walter

I ordered that Series Lighting DVD Episode 1 from you on Aug. 15, 2005 and money was taken from me on Aug. 15, 2005 yet no word of the product actually being sent as of yet. Whats the word?

You are the second to send me a message. You should have gotten an automated message. I’m going to have to send them out manually it seems. Product ships during the first week of September as it says on the website. If you get another message that is automated, just ignore it. I’m going to reset the system and it will make another message to everyone. I wanted to go back and add some thoughts to the program after watching it a few times to make it all clearer so I delayed finishing it after making twenty DVDs already.
