walmart madness

Anyone see the news coverage of those jackasses fighting in walmart? Just amazing. One of these days, someone will be killed over this ****.Fighting over stuff that is, in reality, junk.

Actually, there was a lady killed yesterday at the opening of some store (not sure if it was Walmart or not). Saw it on the news, crazy...

That also happened two years ago at a Wal Mart. A woman was trampled to death because they were giving free DVD players to the first 20 people in the door. At least she died for a good cause, right?:undecided

"Jackasses" is the proper term. People are so freaking pathetic.

To give this a sci-fi direction... which I think about all the time... how is it that SETI and all of these top level government scientists think that if we ever encounter aliens that it's going to be anything but bad for us? For the vast majority we're all just monkeys with a pocket full of credit cards and driving cars... and at the same time we take advantage of virtually every living thing under us.

Considering that we're at the peak of our technology on this very day... and we've only been in the technological age for a hundred years at best... in a universe/galaxy that's at least 5 BILLION years old... What do you think the odds are that if an alien life form even has the technology to GET here that it will embrace our farting, fighting, animal-eating, selfish, stupid asses?

They'd be watching the Walmart video and thinking, "Hmm I wonder if we can use their teeth for something?"

We can't effectively communicate with other HUMANS! How in the hell are we supposed to communicate with an alien life-form that's got a hundred million years advantage on us? Now excuse me while I go enjoy some left-over turkey and pumkin pie.

Half price in Klingon nappies and 75% off on a second scape pod for your space mini-van!

Free critter for the children!

Im afraid this sales thing is just a way of letting people know who has the power (those big companies) and where their customers deserve to be (fighting to death for the last Keanu Reeves DVD at 1.99)...

And that´s why i spend my money on big toys, so i´m not able to find myself in the security monitor at the front of one of those doors...

Who even wants to go ouot and shop in that madness? Is the discount even worth getting beat down for? Could you imaghine being in that melee with a child? Bunch of asshats need to be removed from my planet

And who's to say they're not worse?

That's my point EXACTLY... the universe as WE know it is all about exploiting whatever other living things we can all around us, with the exception of a few loved individuals... and the rare person who really does care about everyone else.

So if an alien species arrives here with the same mentality and they've also got 100 million years of "natural selection" ahead of us... we're toast. When's the last time you considered what the squirrels in your yard thought about the limbs you trimmed off the tree... or better still world politics.

Considering the world is filled with people who can't get along with each other how in the hell does anybody think we'd get along with a totally different species that would be on a magnatude of 10x higher intelligence then us? I like how everybody thinks we're so advanced over 100 years ago but that alien visitors would be like us 50 years from now.

We'd be lunch, fertilizer, or migrant workers... or maybe about the same level of entertainment that you get watching an ant hill.

Help yourself... I haven't mentioned any of the good ones yet. Ideas are worth the price you just paid... Execution is where reality sets in.

MattinSTL, you bring up some good points.

I just came back from Walmart and that place was a zoo. Made me ashamed to be a human being.

Yes, you heard me right.

I'd rather be a monkey. With an HVX. And Barry Green's brain.

Now quick, someone give me a banana before I start throwing poop.

November 26th was "Buy nothing Day". I don't shop at wal mart after watching that DOC, The high price of low price.

One of our local shopping malls opened at 3AM yesterday--and the place was packed! It was a mob scene.

I don't get it. All the stuff that's 15% off now will be 50% off on December 26.

i read this article a while ago and just found it again after reading this thread. very very good read on wal-mart
http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/77/walmart.html

Wow, I started reading that Fast Company article and became so disheartened about a quarter of the way through that I couldn't even read the rest... The quote "We're shopping ourselves out of jobs" was particularly scary. Personally I have a lot of ambivalence about Wal-Mart. Living in New York City, I always find it a big treat, when road-tripping, to walk into a Wal-Mart and cheaply pick up supplies I need for the road -- a car vacuum cleaner that works really well, $12; pudding packs, 8 for $2; a new headset for my cell phone, $19.99, etc. On the other hand, when I see what large retailers moving into Manhattan are doing to the long-revered mom-and-pop businesses here, it's just a sorry state of affairs. And then again, if Wal-Mart suddenly decided to stock DVXs and Sennheisers and Fostex mixers, etc., at cut-rate prices, wouldn't we all be first in line? It's a tough call -- taking the high road vs. saving a few bucks...

Well guys I guess this could quickly be about more then just Walmart... but I think the South Park guys said it best... remember the episode with the "goo backs"? The "time immigrant" workers from the future who came to our time to get jobs? Well I'm sure that 90% of South Park fans didn't quite put it together when the town meeting led to a "pile of gay activity" in an effort to eliminate future generations... which would eliminate the time immigrants, which would allow everybody to keep their jobs... and at the end of the episode when everyone realized that everyone else would just continue to do whatever was best for them personally they said "back to the pile"... The moral of the story is everyone is so cheap and selfish that we'll just keep F-ing ourselves. I especially like how they got in front of some immigrants to do that stuff like it would chase them off... and they just watched with no emotion. Think about it... it's not THEIR problem because it's only understandable that they "shop at walmart" to benefit their situation as well. You can't keep pouring your glass of lemonade into the world's swimming pool and think "yay! now we ALL have lemonade!" You gotta' teach those other guys to make their own lemonade or we'll all eventually have the same crappy SOL.

To clarify... Walmart isn't doing ANYTHING to you! It isn't Walmart's fault that all this stuff is happening. It's YOU who are doing it. Since there's no way any of "you" (whoever "you" are) will pay an extra twenty-five cents for something... everyone just has to sit here and watch as the country bails water INTO the sinking ship as fast as they can.

It's like tarriffs and everything else... I get so sick of people speak of a group in third person even though they're part of it.

I know so many people who aren't bothered by things like this; Walmart and the death of customer service, outsourcing jobs, immigrant workers taking jobs "that nobody wants to do anyway", etc... it makes me want to puke. George Carlin got it right... the word is full of NIMBY's and whatever acronym you can make up for people who don't worry about what isn't affecting them personally RIGHT NOW.

Whew... (sorry).
