VTR problems with FCPHD

I am having problems with FCPHD capturing from my VTR. It recognises the VTR, and lets it fast-forward or Rewind but it will only capture 3 seconds of footage before it stops and says the end of tape has been reached.

So I tested it by capturing from my DVX and FCP would capture from it.

So what's the deal? is there some setting I need to change? Or do I need to return my $1600 vtr and get another one?

Any suggestions would be great.
