EDITED TO ADD BY JACK: Go to the last post of this thread for rules :)

Since John locked the thread, I couldn't add Sarah Silverman's Great Schlep voting campaign, but here it is- ***LINK REMOVED*** . Pretty funny :)

Has anyone else seen the South Park episode about voting? That's one of my favorite episodes...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douche_and_Turd

I have to laugh at all the Rock the Vote, Don't Vote, etc. campaigns... because they all emphasize that they don't care who you vote for, just so long as you vote. Even some of the people who bring up the point about how lucky we are to have a voice in our government, compared to other countries... leave it with saying that you gotta' exercise your right to vote.

To be clear... I agree with this! I agree that we are lucky to have a voice in government and that if you don't vote, you shouldn't complain that much about the outcome...

BUT... I love that South Park episode... because all of those campaigns... from BOTH sides... that talk about the importance of voting as a neutral idea, actually have an agenda. They know the target audience and the odds that those who they convince to vote, will vote for the candidate or idea they were already endorsing.

I wanted to post that under John's thing... but it was closed.

It's so ironic to me that for as disgusting and revolting as some South Park episodes are... there are so many other episodes that are pure genius... they're of the extreme few that can see things as they are, and point out the obvious.

Unless you live in Florida, in which case the candidate with the most backing will have the votes discounted because of hanging chads.

Hmm... yes, but well... here we go... and by "we" I don't mean "me"... it's funny how the way they run things around here is the way they have to... because you're opening a wound with that one.

Again... not for me... I don't care... but wow, I remember that heated controversy.

Yeah... that was a particularly sore spot for me. Sorry, my lips are sealed.
Too late for that. You already opened up a can of worms I'm afraid. I won't respond to it politically but by making that comment you really opened the door.

Which is also against the rules here.

Just saying....

:)

Exactly. They show how stupid both sides of an issue truly are. When they start to get a little preachy, they're the first ones to draw attention to it and turn it into even more comedy. It's brilliant.

Well we talked about it and decided that unlike religion, you couldn't really argue that there are no such things as political candidates and that voting and encouraging people to vote in a non partisan way was important.

Really it's how the members force our hand.

We start a pro vote thread and lock it. FOR A REASON, which this thread has made obvious. If we start a thread on a topic and lock it it's not an invetation to start another one. If we wanted an open thread on the topic, we wouldn't have locked the first one.

If you want your non-partisan pro-vote PSA's to be included in the thread John started and locked, PM him or myself and we'll include the link and a shout out to you for bringing it to our attention.

EDIT: Ok just checked the Silverman link. Talk about NOT non partisan. And not appropriate for this forum. You know the rules. Would def. not append that to John's post. If you have a NON PARTISAN pro-vote PSA's or links we'll link add them to John's but they MUST be non-partisan and cannot endorse either candidate in anyway.

Alright guys - I suppose we should have posted something clarifying this along with the post of the PSA.

I'll try to clear up any confusion here.
I'm sure that post took some of you for a loop from a site that has always said 'no politics allowed.'

The reason the original post was locked was actually to stop any political discussion -
we felt the PSA was not only well done, but remained nonpolitical in its message and was something that we, as a site, could support.

But please make no mistake - the posting of that PSA is not an open door to discuss politics on DVXuser, as Jack mentioned.

We are talking about trying some new things here shortly, and that PSA posting was just priming the pump.
As long as you guys can all keep things apolitical and nonpartisan we should be able to have some fun - while at the same time hopefully doing something constructive with our skills here.

Just to clarify - the moderators felt it was okay to support the concept of voting.
And we felt that PSA was rather well done in getting that idea across in a non political way.

Lastly, mjjason brings up a good point.
Not voting is fine if that is someone's choice after considering their options -
we are not trying to give the impression that we are pushing anyone to vote.
All we were hoping to do was get users to consider the concept of voting itself.

Yes, we're treading a fine line here - we fully admit that.
But we have faith that you guys can handle it without things getting out of hand.

As long as everyone can stick with us and keep things non political and civil,
I think we can have a good time walking this tightrope together.

Deal?
:)

This includes any pro-voting PSA that you would like to make yourself.

Vote Fest PSA:

In the spirit of community, regardless of online or physical, we have decided to launch a mini-fest: VOTE FEST.

Situation: You receive an email from the non profit non political party, DVXUsers For Voting asking you to help them create a PSA to help people get out to vote. In your assignment you are told that:
1. Your ad must be 30 seconds or less
2. They don't care what camera you shoot on, what format it is in, or whether you even use a camera to create your ad
3. They want the message to be on voting, they are an nonpolitical organization and can't be seen leaning towards one party or candidate. In fact they tell you that any politically leaning ads will be automatically discarded.
4. They tell you that at the end of their ad they want the standard message of: This ad was approved by DVXUsers For Voting.
5. Finally, they tell you that they need this at least one week prior to election day... you realize that you need to research this in order to find out when you need to have this in by.

If you would like to make a PSA, do so. Maybe we'll open up the dvxfest upload page for your "entries".

Maybe we can even pick a 'best dvxuser submitted psa"... A little contest if you will :) No threads about it. Just make it, upload it, we'll post any that meet the guidelines in John's original thread.

Later,
Jason
