Volume Fluctuation on DVD but not Original

For some reason, when I play the DVD of a short film I just made, the closing song has strange volume fluctuations. The volume gets soft and loud back and forth for a good twenty seconds. It also sounds like it might fade from left to right as well. The audio for the rest of the film sounds fine and this volume flux is only noticeable on DVD and not in the original mpeg or avi files. I know it's not my TV speakers because I hear the same problem though headphones from the TV.

Any idea what's going on here? Could this be some sort of phase problem?

Check your DVD setup menu. Many players have an in-built automatic gain adjustment that lowers the sound whenever things get loud.

Also, check the DVD on other players or home theater systems.

It could be that you just have a bad burn, and need to re-author the DVD. Not all authoring software is created equal, and you may want to hire out the encoding and duplication work.
