Voices for ADR?

So I was just asked how many voices I have for ADR? I do not have any idea what they mean. They said they are not talking about how many voices I can do with protools. They say their last project they only had 1000 voices for adr, but I dont know what they are talking about. Any ideas? I recorder the adr for their last movie so I know they are not saying they had 1000 different people talking in adr, very confused.

I'm a bit perplexed as well, Sysyphus. "Voices" can describe the number of simultaneous audio channels supported by a DAW platform (eg. Protools), but I find it quite unlikely that an ADR session would require 1000 voices. As you've already pointed out, it is unlikely that they're referring to characters or actors requiring ADR.

Perhaps this person was conflating ADR with a "loop group". A loop group is a group of actors who are brought in to record background crowd chatter (aka. "Walla" or "Rhubarb"). The logistics would be complicated, but its quite possible to gather together and direct 1000 people for a large crowd walla session. However, this is not ADR; loop groups are rarely recorded to picture, and rarely use character-specific scripted dialogue. At most, you may have everyone chant one or two lines together on cue or react together in some way (a cheer, a gasp, or perhaps laughter). More often, the group will be directed to babble meaninglessly; some repeating "rhubarb", some repeating "peas and carrots", some "red wine white wine", while the remainer just say "walla walla".

You should probably ask the person with whom you were speaking for a clarification.

A person who does voice-over and narration work is sometimes called a "voice" or "voice actor." As in "Don Fontaine was one of the most often used voices in the business for movie trailers." Perhaps they were asking how many people you knew who do voice-over work so they would know how many you might offer them to audition and select from.

It could be they don't know what they're talking about.

Maybe they're talking about individual audio clips after everything's edited. It wouldn't take very long at all to accumulate 1000 audio clips of dialogue. That's all I can think of.

Yeah they have no idea what they are talking about. I have asked everyone I know and we all say they are just talking out of their asses. Thanks for trying to help though.
