Voice Recorder MP3

I'm trying to decide which model to get and hoping for recommendations (creative labs, iriver?). I need something for dictating notes to myself and recording script meetings and such. I'm hoping one of the mp3 units is good enough as a voice recorder. Anybody have any luck? I don't need vast memory, maybe 256 or 512mb. Trying not to spend more than necessary.

The ipods have mics that you can attach to them, they have a ass load of memory too so if you have the money, by all means go that way...

Hoping to not spend so much. There's a bunch of 'em around $100. Maybe one of them can do what I need?

The Sony MD recorders are good. Its cool cause you have unlimited memory via the MD disks. You can find em everywhere, probably get a good deal off ebay. The MD disks are real cheap too. A lot of people use the MD recorders for recording sound for thier shorts; I used to have one, but I sold it to my buddy for $50 before I got the ipod.

Re: Voice Recorder MP3

I use an MD recorder because of the optical input action, the bitchin' quality, the 55 hours of battery life (on mine, anyway), the better-sounding audio codec, and the unlimited storage capacity... It's the best option I have found yet (yes, that includes selling your first-born child into slavery to afford an iPod...) How does Apple get away with those prices? Have they brainwashed you all??

Re: Voice Recorder MP3

I own an iRiver H320 and it has the best functions and the best sound, it blows ipods away. It also records MP3 up to 128kbps, which is pretty damn good. I just connect a lav mic(it comes with one but I use my Azden lav) with mini plug and record, and it sounds amazing. It is good enough to be used as a back up mic for shooting.

Also look into old iRiver H120, it records uncompressed WAV, and much cheaper.

Re: Voice Recorder MP3

The thing about MD, though, is that if you record in SP, there IS no compression, so you don't lose any quality or detail (especially if you use an optical input). And even if you step down to the first compression level (LP2) you're still recording at 132 kbps, and with the ATRAC-3 codec, which sounds far better than mp3.

Re: Voice Recorder MP3

thanks for the input. if i go MD, any particular models i should look for or stay away from?

Re: Voice Recorder MP3

Look for a Sony mz-n10. It's the nicest MD recorder you can buy without going into the HI-MD realm (which is a whole 'nother can of worms... that I wouldn't recommend opening). You can find them pretty cheap now (I got mine for $170), but in their heyday, they ran about $350. It's a completely magnesium outer case, so it's damn near indestructable, and it's the only one that comes with an internal battery (but it has a small external battery case if you need to double the battery life). Plus it comes with a cradle and a bitchin' backlit remote for all your low-light needs.
