I'm not sure if i posted in the right spot let say I film a movie without a shotgun mic abviously the audio will be terrible. If I wanted to do voice over with pro-tools would it come out good?

If you film a movie without a shotgun mic, that doesn't mean the audio will be terrible. There are many types of mics other than shotguns that can get great sound, depending on the situation you're in.

I think you are wanting to say ADR, rather than "voice over". There are so many variables that come into play when "shooting"/recording ADR and Pro Tools doesn't even have to be in that equation for getting good ADR.

I've had directors record their actors using GarageBand, Nuendo, Cubase, DSLRs, Zoom recorders, etc. and some of those actually turned out excellent.

It just so happens that Pro Tools is a common piece of software in the United States. In the end you can really use any DAW, etc. and still get the same if not better results. It just depends on how familiar the ADR recordist/mixer is with the software that is given to them.

Voice-over is similar to narration - it does not sync with the picture.

Are you asking about ADR - Automated Dialog Replacement - where the actors perform their lines in a studio to be used instead of the production dialog?

If I wanted to do voice over with pro-tools would it come out good?

Yes, if you use Pro Tools it will sound fantastic, or it might really, really suck. Done properly ADR can be completely seamless. Done poorly it looks like a badly dubbed 1970's Kung Fu flick.

It will depend upon the quality of your microphone(s), the quality of your mic preamp(s), the quality of your engineering skills, the quality of your talent (actors), the quality of your abilities to coach the actors through the scenes, the skills of the dialog editor, the tools available (such as Vocalign) and the skills of your rerecording mixer.

Yes and no.

Pro Tools has very little to do with the quality at all.

You can get very good sound quality without a gun mic. if you know what yuou are doing.

If doing sound later
  • you will have to get the sound in sync. with the pictutres
  • you will have to match the sound atmosphere with what was filmed
  • you will have to make sure that the ambience matches (eg: don't have what sounds like indoor soind in an outdoor situation)
  • you will have to spend lots of time (and money) getting it right

Getting it right is the first place is much better and much cheaper than trying to fix it later.

now, now, now. Don't do that Murdock thing and partially quote out of context to add a new spin.

He wasn't bashing protools, he was saying that what you record on and work in has very little to do with the quality you will end up with.

Pro Tools, like every other DAw in existence, is just a tool. If you are good with that tool amazing things can happen, if your not they probably wont.
