Voice over recording

Hey guys,

I was wondering. I wanna record a voice over using Soundtrack Pro, but I don't wanna use the build in mic in my Macbook Pro. I have a XLR microphone and that quility should be fine, but when I plug it in and change the recording settings to build in input, the vloume is low and I only get one level bar (left part of the sound). Now you talked about the Imic... Will this solve my problem or do I have another problem? I hope you can help. Thank in advance.

I'm not on the Mac platform, but I've used M-Audio's MobilePre USB pre-amp. It's cheap, and the sound is not too bad. At least it should give you the level you're looking for.

Few things to keep in mind!!

Mic levels are 40db less than line levels. So somewhere you're going to need to push the gain.

Ah ok, that is why the level is so low, anybody know the best setting then for voice over in the highest quality? Probably should be a combination of pushing up the gain and pushing up the volume in final cut pro (it doesn't seem to work in Soundtrack Pro)...

I use the Samson CO1U, great mic for the price, plug and play, USB port, really great quality for the price! And no need for any preamps or interfaces.
