VOD.com offers a non-exclusive distribution deal for all shorts, features, documentaries, music videos, experimental, trailers of all genres. Check out the newly designed site Vod.com

Video On Demand and online streaming video is the best way to get exposure for your video work. Vod.com averages about 10,000 unique visitors a day to watch your videos.

There is no entry fee and you are guaranteed to have your work on the site. Vod.com does not own your work. The Producer retains 100% of the rights to the film.

This avenue of distribution is recommended for projects that have gone through the festival circuit or are no longer eligible for film festivals. Submitting work that you hope to premiere at festivals is not advisable since most festivals require "Premiere Status".

Unlike other online films sites we guarantee that your work will be live on Vod.com within two weeks. Vod.com accepts submissions on DVD, VHS, MiniDV, BetaSP, FTP Upload and CD-R. If you have any other format please contact Vod.com for more information.

Vod.com seems like a cool option for online distribution, and it brings up an interesting question about self-distribution:

As video-on-demand becomes more and more accessible for internet users, does it not make sense for the producers of low-budget DV features to retain the rights to their features and self-distribute?

I won't name names, but there are several straight-to-DVD distributors who pay almost nothing upfront to the filmmaker and receive exclusive ownership of the filmmaker's work. Sure, it can mean great exposure for the filmmaker, getting their work on Amazon, Netflix and even some retail outlets. But if their movie becomes a cult hit, they won't see much money at all.

Since viable and affordable streaming options for feature-length movies are right around the corner, we as independent producers and filmmakers are entering a very interesting time. DVD duplication/replication technology is cheap enough so that a low-budget DV feature loaded with extras can be offered for the same price as a big-budget Hollywood feature, and be listed next to one another on Amazon. And with streaming video, low-budget filmmakers have a chance to get a jump on the major studios, who will resist streaming as long as possible.

As you can probably tell, I'm a big fan of self-distribution. :)

Right now I have a DVD on customflix.com and I am thinking about self distribution myself. They get between $6.95-9.95 of the sale of my DVD plus 5% for credit card orders and if the person calls the toll free number to order on the phone they add another $2.50 on top of that! If that isnt bad, I dont have this feature but If I wanted to advertise on Amazon, Ebay, Google etc, they would take an additional 25%! I would have nothing in terms of profit. I have someone that has a duplicator and Kinko's has been printing up my DVD cover inserts for me so I can sell a few DVDs on the street as I am still promoting my page on the customflix site.
