.VOB converted to .AVI shows only audio?

Hi there,

I have some footage from a DVD that i want to add to my showreel. It is a .VOB file that I converted in MPEG Streamclip to a .AVI file, encoded with Avid DNxHD.

Now when I drag the file into Premiere Pro it only shows up as an audio file even though it's nearly 8gig (7mins).

What am I doing wrong here?

DNxHD doesn't work well in .avi container, try .mov

CS4 should be able to import MPEG2 natively (you may have to demultiplex the VOB first), this way you don't have additional generational quality loss

I have CS3.

The original .vob file isn't HD, it just came on a normal DVD. So what is a good codec and container to use when converting? I notice that the DNxHD is only HD resolutions.

On windows, anything with AVI container is preferred over MOV container

You could use uncompressed avi, or lossless compression like huffyuv, or ut video codec

If you know how to use avisynth, there is an avisynth import plugin that works for CS3/4

You can use virtualdubmod , or avidemux

You need MPEG2 plugin for MPEGStreamClip to even be able to open it, and I'm not even sure it will work for this task. I don't fine it very good for AVI support at all.

When you import, you may have to interpret the footage (aspect ratio, field order if interlaced)

If your DVD is telecined (3:2 pulldown) , I would remove pulldown before importing

DGIndex -> AVISynth (via DGDecode.dll) -> TFM/TDecimate (if telecined) -> ffdshow's makeAVIs.

Alternatively, use VirtualDub with the AVS script and simply make a lossless file in Lagarith or Huffyuv. This will be faster in editing, but require more HDD space. The ffdshow method does not require much more than a few megabytes at most.
