VO in Vegas ?

How does one do a voce over in Vegas 6.0 ?

I can see arm / record buttons on the audio tracks.

We hit play and voice over and what is being recorded gets cut onto the voice track ? If this is true. What happens when vegas stutters. Thats natural during preview i know. But doe the sound match up exactly. Also would it help to ram preview the small segment we want to VO and then talk along since there would be no frame drop and the VO guy can speak correctly in synce with the video scenes ?

Also how is the physical hook up ? Most mics come with 3 pin xlr right ? How do we hook this up to the comp ?

Thanks

You should be able to "loop playback" (q) if you want someone to speak in sync with the scenes. I think you could even add 1 frame of tone before and after the picture to help the speaker get a feel for the timing.

2- You need to have your microphone connected to the sound card or sound interface on your computer. For example, you could get something like the M-Audio USBPre or MobilePre. In Vegas, you switch the sound options to look at the right sound card/interface.

The USBPre will take XLR in.

Most of the sound built into computer motherboards isn't great quality, and they take mini-jack in (mic level and line level jacks on the motherboard).

Like Glenn said, motherboard inputs arent too good. They arent even spectacular on sound cards, unless it has XLR or 1/4" inputs- most 1/8" jacks sound crappy.

Glen like u say. Sound from the motherboard is very very bad. It picks up all the electrical noise of any activity on the board. I can hear my harddrive activate and deactivate on one of my systems. Im planning to put in a Creative 5.1 card Dolby. So that i can preview dolby mxing too. Is this correct ?

You can preview 5.1 if you have 5.1 speakers.

I would personally avoid Creative sound cards since their previous products were poor (BSODs, quality not as advertised, etc.) although their recent products seem to be decent.

But for your use, you should realize that the sound card only has mini-plug in. You might as well get something like the M-audio USBpre (or Mobilepre), which has XLR in, I think it has phantom, microphone pre-amp, etc.

*Or, you could get a microphone that uses the mini-plug connector. In which case a sound card like the Creative you mention and a microphone like the following might work. I've never tested that out.

2- I am guessing you will do almost no 5.1 work.

for voiceovers i have a friend who has a nice little music studio set up in his basement. he has cubase, preamps, condenser mics and the g5 and all that nice stuff.

you can cut an ADR or VO pretty quick and it sounds great. i dont know if you have a buddy like this but if you do it makes it sound a lot better than if you just use your computer. stupid computers. 100% of the time you can only yget sound as good as your hardware permits.
