VO effect for All Hallows entry

Hi guys,

I'm playing with sound design for my All Hallows entry, and wondering how to achieve a particular effect. In the present, an agent has returned to a crime scene to recreate events leading up to a murder. In the recent past, he and his partner were at the scene investigating. The agent in the present is recounting the earlier conversation with his partner. We'll also hear the chatter of police radios, maybe a siren (general crime scene stuff).

Any ideas on how to manipulate the audio of that earlier scene to give it a non present or altered feel? I'm working with Vegas.

Thanks,

Steve

A bit of reverse reverb might work well. Not loads - just enough to make it sound obviously 'different'. Then a smattering of reverb/delay. Again, not too much.
Funky reverb/delay is a bit of a cliche for 'audio from the past'/'dream sequence', but cliches are effective, easily recognisable dramatic tools, which is exactly what you need when you only have 5 minutes to tell your story.

:)

Have the agent do his best Don Knots impersonation... then when we come back to the present day have the other guy say, "yeah, back then you sounded a lot like Don Knots"... it will be spooky and also tell everyone that it was in the past.

... or you could just do what wilx just said... which is perfect... down to the explaination about having only 5 minutes to tell the story.

Depending on how far it is in the past... you'll notice on cold case that they use music from the era... and then process the footage to further sell the idea of the past... now I know you can't use BTO to say it was the 70's or whatever... but you can choose a canned music that's in the style of the era... and then process your footage to further sell the date.

Thanks guys, very helpful...I'll lose myself in Vegas today.

Wilx, when you mentioned cliche, I immediately thought of the shop teacher's wife in South Park who died in the plane crash. Hehe, I've answered my own question of "how much reverb is too much" :).
